Stomach sucked in while eating?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby Jenn » May 1st, 2006, 5:55 pm

When Maddie eats her dogfood, she seems to completely suck in her stomach, and looks like she is starving to death. She will look like an ehthipion or something, you can see her chest cavity and then nothing but a hole and her ribs and spine.. When she's done, back to normal. It's extremely strange, I haven't taken a picture of her since it looks like she's seriously starving to death. She's not in any way, shape or form! I've tried adding water to her food to make her slow down eating, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I've never seen a dog do this, and it's almost like she doesn't breathe or something until the food is gone. :| Anyone elses dog do this?

Oh, lord, Shorty does this all the time -- she INHALES her food at lightning speed, and her belly remains tucked until she's done (that's about 10 seconds flat, LOL).

I've seen it lots, especially with puppies for some reason. :|

Rocky has done same thing especially when a couple of months ago when he had more rib showing then you could really see that.

Yeah, you can see every one of Nisha's ribs when she eats...and she takes her time...

Same with Connor, Riggs and Ruby.

It's nothing to worry about.

They always do that-I notice it at the shelter all the time. When Kona eats she looks like she's going to blow away...she's still on the thin side (still nursing!) but it's ridiculous how thin she looks then!

I'd say!! lol I've never seen a dog do it, and no other dog in my presence other than her. It's really pretty freaky, just glad to not be alone now!
I've always just accepted it, but a friend said something yesterday about it, so it started me wondering.

Meesha does this too. She eats in like a second ...you would think I starved her.

They all seem to do this. I know a couple of rescue people who take pictures of their rescue dogs while they're eating to make them look as pathetic as possible for their listings. :|

Well that's pathetic doing that, I'd much rather adopt a healthy dog, than one that looks like it's starving to death.
I've never had a dog that did it, and Ben doesn't nor Tucker. I had no idea it was so "common"...
