Hi Christine,
We discontinued the metal buckle style about two years ago, and they now only come with the plastic buckle. We had a problem with some of the spring release mechanisms in the metal buckles and have found these to be more reliable.

I might get one anyway, just for him to wear around the house and in case I have to grab him fast for some reason...
For outside walking - definitely don't have that much faith in a plastic buckle, so that's a no-go.

I'm going to get one for Kate too. It's perfect for around the house.

Our collars came today... and they are NICE! :confetti:

The MARTINGALE (style) COLLAR is very sturdy, and it's loose enough to not cause any friction on the skin. Faust has been wearing his since this morning, and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Fingers crossed that it lasts. :D

i have the planet dog collars with the metal buckles (hemp collar and nylon collar!) and while the collars themselves are strong, those buckles are way too easy to press open. i definitely don't trust them either, at least not for leash walking without a backup.

christine, doc's neck used to look like raw hamburger some days and i used to have to take collars off at night and let his neck breathe, etc. then i finally started to suspect that the metal buckles on the flat collars pressing against his neck were actually causing the problem, and not the collar itself. i finally bought him a loosely-fitted leather and chain martingale from collar mania. she made it so that it hangs loosely on his neck like a choker but small enough that it can't slip off his head.

it was affordable, i know it was less than $30, and we haven't had any problems since . . . he even has a fine layer of hair on his neck now, because it's not being irritated by the collar anymore!

I meant buckle buckle, not those "press open" buckles, sorry I wasn't clear.

Thanks, Reba... I will definitely get in touch w/Lisa, because while the hemp collar is great for wearing around the house, I need something a little sturdier for leash walks. :)

Fave you tried a fleece lined collar? Stillwater makes them cheap so it would be worth a shot to try

That's what I was going to suggest...lining the collar or buying one that is lined.
