Allergy dogs and collars

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby amazincc » October 22nd, 2009, 1:10 am

Does anyone know of good collars for allergy dogs?
No matter what kind of collar I put on Faust - he developes big angry red welts which turn into big oozing sores around his neck, especially on his throat.
I've tried pretty much everything from leather to nylon to stainless steel to nickel-plated to you-name-it.
Any suggestions?

No collar?

How tight does it have to be?

A nice loose collar that can be used to hold tags...the Ruffwear Knot-a-Collar...Sawyer wears one so he's ready to go all the time (my guys don't wear collars at home). I don't think they sell them anymore...but I see them for sale from time to time. (they now have "Knot just a collar"...which is different)

The spiffy dog collar is nice because it's quick dry, in case that's a problem.

"No collar" is not an option right now, at least not while he's awake... lol
I do take it off when he's crated, and at night while he's sleeping.

It has to be tight enough to not slip over his head while he's on a leash and he has a pretty big neck anyway, so it's hard to find one that doesn't rub against his skin, you know?
He doesn't get wet - I think he's just ubersensitive to stuff that comes in close contact w/his skin on a regular/long-term basis, especially on his face and neck.
He is wearing a very simple nylon flat collar right now, and where the fabric touches the base of his throat - huge sore spot already.

Have you contacted Noel? Maybe have her make a martingale that has a large loop, so it hangs low on his neck, but has plenty of space to tighten as necessary.

I think I found something! :)

I'm going to order one and try it out - https://olivegreendog.com/earthdog-hemp ... ollar.html

Earthdog Solid Hemp Martingale Collar

Safer and more gentle than a choke collar with its limited closure, this is the perfect design for dogs who slip out of their collars. Unlike nylon and other synthetics, hemp is naturally hypoallergenic and softens with wear, making this collar extremely comfortable. Machine washable, hassle-free. Collars are 1" wide. Made in the USA.
See additional views for colors--as with all natural dyes, color can vary somewhat. Leash also available.

machine washable is a big plus!

If that doesn't work you could always try one of those fabric covered ones from collarmania - I think they are washable too and I think you can get one with flannel.

Doh! I can't believe I didn't think of the Earthdog ones...I love those collars! I don't have any...but I lust mightily for them...(being a hippy and all...) I just haven't found a pattern I like enough for Score. They're really, really soft and nice. Planet dog also makes hemp collars...and they have metal buckles.

Thanks, Erin... I like that you can engrave the buckles... gonna try one of those as well, and see how he does. :)

earthdog stuff is purdy. I'm upset at the prospect of the collars having plastic buckles though  I emailed to confirm.

This is the e-mail I got...

Hi Christine,
We discontinued the metal buckle style about two years ago, and they now only come with the plastic buckle. We had a problem with some of the spring release mechanisms in the metal buckles and have found these to be more reliable.

I might get one anyway, just for him to wear around the house and in case I have to grab him fast for some reason...
For outside walking - definitely don't have that much faith in a plastic buckle, so that's a no-go.
