We got very bad news about Vincenzo

Here is where we can discuss canine cancers and treatment options to create a support system for those dealing with the disease.

Postby HappyChick » October 20th, 2009, 8:19 pm

Thank you all for the good thoughts and hugs. I believe they are working for us.

Vinny did not have his chemo treatment today. I described everything to Dr. B and she could tell Vinny wasn't his normal cheery self. She did blood tests and got a urine sample from him. Everything looked fine. His HCT (anemia) was down again which would explain why he is more tired. Dr. B did not think it was a good idea to give Vin chemo today with him already feeling poopy. I asked about the chemo "building up" in his system and it does not do that. His body breaks it down and it leaves his body through urine and feces.

We are hoping it's just a normal bad day that dogs can sometimes experience. I suppose with Vinny being such a good fighter throughout this cancer ordeal, he is entitled to a bad day once in awhile. If he is acting better tomorrow, we will do the chemo. If not, we'll wait till next Tuesday.

Vin is resting and has been pretty much since we got back home a couple of hours ago. We've been cuddling on the sofa until I came into the study to write this. Now I'm going to go back out and cuddle some more with my heart dog.

Vinny and I send hugs and thanks to everyone.

So sorry our Vinny is having a bad day. As always, good thoughts are coming your way from us. Kick cancer butt, Vin. You can do it!

I know exactly how you feel about feeling blessed just to have each new day, that is how we feel about Trouble. We are the lucky ones to be able to embrace the journey as a blessing.

Hugs to you both.

I have to agree, I think Vinny is entitled to a day off from being super dog. He can only be awesome 100% of the time, what more do you want? :|

In any case, I hope he's starting to feel better and that this is just a teeny bump in the road :hug3:

Me too, Joyce. Squeeze Vinny for me, okay?

Joyce - I had some tears for Vinny too last night.

Shanna - I'm so glad you put it that way - "our Vinny". I definitely feel like we are part of the big PBT family. Thank you.

pitbullmamaliz wrote:Squeeze Vinny for me, okay?

Liz - Many squeezes given last night and this morning.

Thank you, everyone, for your comforting words. I have to be honest, every time Vinny isn't acting "right" I get scared that it's the cancer fighting us back. I'm sure all of you know where I'm coming from on that. I stay in a positive frame of mind about it as long as he is feeling well, but when he isn't feeling well the doubt creeps back in. I'm just so thankful for this forum where I can put my thoughts and our experiences down in words and have so many people understand and support us. I really, really don't know what I'd do without you all.

Anyway, Vinny and I cuddled together all evening. We watched The Notebook. It's my favorite love story. Vinny slept the whole time and I cried (at the movie). He is sleeping a lot and acts like he is just exhausted. Maybe he's hit the brick wall. On the positive side, he did perk up every time someone went into the kitchen :D chow hound :D and he ate well last night.

This morning he is still pretty sluggish. He went out to do his business and ate some Tripett. After that he was back on the love seat resting. I don't think Vinny will be having his chemo today unless he is back to his normal self at lunch time.

I had a talk with his cancer this morning and cast it away. I'm hoping that plus all the good thoughts you are sending will have Vin feeling better in no time.

Thanks again, everybody!

Sending more good thoughts for you two this morning. Cancer treatments have their up and down days. They are very tough for us humans. It is almost impossible not to get the feeling of dread when the fur kids aren't feeling well. After all, they cannot tell us what the problem is.

:hug3: and positive energy coming from us.

So much for having a bad day....

Vinny is at the hospital right now. He will be spending the night and hopefully coming home tomorrow. He crashed tonight. When I came home from work, Vin went out to potty with the other boys and he was a little unsteady on his feet - I figured it was muscle weakness due to him sleeping so much the last couple of days. He came back in and laid back down. Joe and I left the house for awhile to take care of some stuff. We came back a couple of hours ago and Vin was a mess. He could barely walk. Something like a drunk, stumbling and all. He eyes where doing this crazy thing, I can't remember the name, moving back and forth really fast. He was very dizzy. I was smurfing scared to DEATH that he was dying. I called Dr. B and she met us at All Pets. She is so wonderful. She did a thorough check of Vin and confirmed he was very dizzy and it could be a couple of things. Either he was low on potassium or the cancer had gone to his brain. It makes me freak thinking about it now...

She did a series of blood tests and his potassium is low (3.1 I think) and he is dehydrated. Amazing enough, everything else in his tests looked really good. Liver, Kidneys, HCT, Calcium, etc. were better than Tuesday!

We left Vinny in Dr. B's capable hands, as hard as it was to leave. I'm trying to be positive because I believe Vincenzo is in the best place he could be right now. I also believe it's not his time yet.

Please send positive vibes, good thoughts, prayers, blessings, anything and everything, whatever you do, so OUR Vinny pulls through. I'll update as I get updates.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Low potassium can do some "funny" stuff to you... I was hospitalized for it twice. Poor Vin!

His blood work results sound VERY encouraging however, and - NO! - of course it's not his time yet... you just shush now, woman. >(
Did they keep him to hydrate him overnight? Is he on an IV?

Sending positive vibes, good thoughts, prayers, blessings, anything and everything PLUS tons of love his way!!! :hug3:

I know how scary that must have been for all of you. :hug3: Kato did the same thing (minus the eyes) when he crashed from chemo. I was scared to death. It turned out that his cancer did go to his brain and he's still doing well so even if that had happened there is still hope! I just know Vinny has years to live. :)

If I were you I'd either make a big old drink or take a Xanax right about now. :prescription:

Sending lots of love & ....:goodthoughts: :goodthoughts: :goodthoughts:

Thank you so much for the comments and the information. It makes me feel better to see that what's happening with Vinny is not unusual.

Christine - Dr. B was going to give him an IV and some meds including a Valium to calm the dizziness.
Dee - I didn't know that happened to Kato. Thank you for telling me.

Dr. B will be calling me sometime this morning and I'll update soon after.

Thank you for all your support - you guys are the BEST!
