Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

So the dogs were playing yesterday, I am not sure what happened, but the pup reinjured her leg
Abby may have stepped on the leg, all of the sudden the puppy just started screaming, it was horrible.

I found out more about her injury, she does not have a broken leg, it is a green stick fracture.
It is like a stress fracture in humans, the bone is more like it is "splintered". I didn't have x-rays done yesterday, the doctor didn't feel anything broken or dislocated. She probably just re-stressed the fracture or it is a pulled muscle, I wish it was the muscle, but I really dont think so.

So she is back on crate rest and metacam for pain for 7-10 days. If there is no improvement, x-rays will be done the. The only part I worry about, is her socialization it is such a crucial age for her and she was taken from her littermates so young(5 weeks). She was in foster with another litter for a little over 3 weeks. But still at 9 weeks she is so young

 OH NO!!! Puppy screams are NOT pleasant!

Can you socialize her just keeping her on a leash and monitoring simple play? :|

More important then socialization is healing. Generally with fractures healing time is 4-6 weeks, how long has she been rested for?

IMO I would not take the chance for some time in letting her and your other dog play together - its a big risk.
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

A lot of socialization is done without other dogs...so while she's healing, you can still work on stuff...different places, surfaces, people, other animals, different things to eat out of, so on and so forth...all while keeping her safe and happy.

Poor lil' pup...healing thoughts headed her way.

I have a dog who was in a similar situation.

When Seth was 4-5 months old he disappeared for 10 days and when he returned his elbow was busted. His owners were given an estimate for amputation, they couldn't afford it so they took him to a shelter. The shelter simply cage rested him [my assumption] because the leg was never repaired. He still limps on it, it doesn't extend as far as the other, if he lays on hard surfaces he'll be a little stiff/gimpy but he walks on it, he uses it, he can go on trail rides and doesn't get painful. It's been 7 months since he busted his arm. I will never consider amputation until he doesn't use it. If your puppy does not bare weight on the joint I say amputate, if she does however I wouldn't do it. We took the rear leg off of a puppy that had a similar injury and she used her leg still and it freaked her out not having the leg. I would give her cage rest and time. I wouldn't worry too much about socialization dog wise, at this age she hasn't even had a rabies shot yet so technically she shouldn't really be fraternizing with other dogs really... you can socialize her to people but I think she'll turn out just fine.

What did the vet recommend?

Sorry to be late with this post, I forgot how much time a puppy takes
She is doing great, she is a little gimpy after resting other than that she seems fine.
She is crated most of the time with limited interaction with Abby. She will be with us a week
tomorrow, has learned sit, cries to go out for potty and is learning not to be so mouthy and have such a hard bite(puppy teeth are sharp!) It still amazes me how smart these dogs are :)

btw her name is Lilly!

With people there is a difference between a green stick fracture and a stress fracture... at least there was with me, as they told me that my foot fracture was one and the fracture of my fibula was the other. :|

How's she doing today?
