Bitework Under Gunfire

Weight pull, Protection, Agility, Flyball... you name it!

Postby DemoDick » August 25th, 2009, 10:07 pm

Here is a little video of some training we did at Cher-Car kennels after the DSO. Thanks to Brad for getting into the suit after decoying all weekend. Cheryl has a stable full of EXCELLENT decoys, and we will be thanking them properly in our other DSO threads.

Connor is wasted in the video after working all weekend. We also did a very intense handler protection exercise right before the video. Note that the dog allows a decoy that he was just biting to pet him while he maintains his down before the send.

Not bad for a gunshy dog. :)

I wish I'd been able to stay and watch him train. Seeing videos of Connor is one thing, but getting to watch him in person is just amazing.

Thanks everyone!

This is what we did immediately before the gunfire work. We started with a call-off into a handler defense, but I made two mistakes. First, the distance was too far for him to really understand that I was being attacked after the send and needed his help. If we were closer, I'm pretty sure he would have called-off clean and come to my help a lot sooner, as he's never had a problem with call-offs before, but we've never done one at this distance. You can see his reluctance to take the bite that he knows he was called-off of, but he just can't quite help himself.

The second mistake was sending him with a leash on, as the first decoy accidentally stepped on it as he tried to run back to me which triggered a second bite. You can hear Brad say "That was my fault" and Michelle telling me to take the leash off, but I didn't want to stop and opted instead to just keep ping-ponging him between decoys and trust that they would would watch their feet, which they did.

The second decoy esquives him, and Connor gets MAD when he misses the bite. You can hear him comment after Connor takes the bite.

I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

He's all right. I'd like him a lot more if he'd stop marking everywhere. :cuss:
