Keep your fingers crossed for Cooper

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby jcoffey917 » August 24th, 2009, 9:53 pm

Cooper had his first and hopefully last trip to the emergency vet today. Last night around 7 Cooper threw up his breakfast (he hadn't eaten dinner yet but he still threw up a good amount of food) He threw up again around 730 but then seemed fine. I gave him a little water but didn't give him dinner and he held it down ok. Around midnight he had diarrhea in his bed, but after i got it cleaned up and put him back in his crate he seemed fine again. We had gone to Pet Smart and gotten his nails clipped in the day so I thought maybe he was just stressed from it. Today I gave him a small amount of food for breakfast, he didnt really eat much before I went to work but he finished it at lunch. He was in his crate all day and no throw up or diarrhea so we went for a walk when i got home at 5. As soon as we got back he started throwing up again- first time was his food from earlier but then he threw up only bile about 4 times and was drooling and acting very lethargic. My vet was already closed so I brought him to the e-vet. They gave him some fluids and put him on an anti nausea and anti inflammatory medicine. They had me give him some low sodium chicken broth tonight and it's a bland diet tomorrow. If he is still throwing up tomorrow, he has to go back in for x-rays to make sure there isn't a blockage. He still hasn't pooped normal either, but he hasn't eaten much. Keep your fingers crossed for Cooper for poop and no vomit :(

I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Thanks everyone for the good thoughts! No more throw up last night, he got his first breakfast of boiled beef and rice this morning so we'll see if he can keep that down. He did have a little diarrhea again, but the vet said that was ok. So far so good!

Well he seems to be back to normal today :) Scarfing down his boiled beef and rice, no throwing up, and running around the house like a maniac. I think he has pent up energy from yesterday. Still no solid poop, but he hasn't eaten too much yet.

You may not see him poop for a day or so. The bland diet (rice and chicken or beef) is designed so the dog's digestive tract doesn't have to work too hard -- the diet is almost completely absorbed by the dog so there is very little waste left to poop out.

Glad to hear he's doing so much better!
