Glucasamine & Allergies

Postby hugapitbull » May 18th, 2009, 1:21 pm

I started Trouble on the Glucasamine/Chondroitin/MSM combo last Sunday. Yesterday she was itchy beyond belief, licking, chewing, scratching, :nono: and chewed a big raw spot at the base of her tail and on her butt. I switched her from claritin to benedryl late yesterday and it dawned on me the only change I had made was the supplement.

I got the bottle out and started reading (this time everything). The pills are made with shellfish, and has a warning about pets with shellfish allergies. Well, our little sweetheart cannot eat shrimp. I stopped the supplement last night I'm checking to see if the liquid has the same warning. If it does, it looks like I'm stuck giving her small doses of a prescription drug for the stiffness of aging.

I think Troubs would have to eat an enormous amount of those things to get the concentrated benefit of one pill. :?

some flavored kinds also use real flavoring, so watch out for that, too!

I'm not super good with fancy schmancy words, but this is what Oscar's cosequin DS has in it :

glucosamine HCl 99%
Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 95% (TRH122)
Manganese (as Manganese Ascorbate)

maybe you could try that? :|

You can probably find it cheaper if you do a search.

Thank you, thank you. Once I get her booboo well, I'll give one of them a try. :)

I'm not thinking I want to feed her chicken feet. Something about those toes hanging out her mouth makes me :puke:

Try this

http://www.liquidhealthinc.com/prodInte ... ?prodID=40

It is a "green grown" glucosamine supplement so it doesn't contain any shellfish. I've heard good things about it

Well I caved last night and started her on prednisone. We (and she) couldn't stand the scratching, licking, and chewing any longer. She's had two doses and is much better already. Poor little allergy dog :sad2:

I tried giving Jessie glucosamine and chondroitin capsules (from the pharmacy, no flavour) and she had loose stools, I stopped and they stopped... I'm afraid to screw up her GI again, but she needs it.

do you know if the Cosequin is any different? It didn't say the source of the Glucosamine on the bottle, I wonder if its synthesized or something?
