I have found a source for Pack Cloth with some fun colors and some limited colors of Cordura. It will make very nice rain coats and should be heavy duty enough for forest hiking protection.

I'll post some pics of the colors when I get a chance.

I suppose you'd have to pre-shrink it, if you were going to back it with fleece etc?

Yep, I usually preshrink just to make sure that when someone washes it the coat doesn't shrink to Chihuahua size.
