Wellness & a few other brands

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby Tubular Toby » April 5th, 2009, 11:38 am

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on Wellness Super5Mix? Any good experiences, bad experiences?

I've had Toby on it for 3-4 months now and while he doesn't look bad, he's still gassy and possibly even has hives from it. Not sure on the latter. I was considering switching him to Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, or Solid Gold.

Someday I'll be able to stop making new posts about dog food. :stuck:

The one time I used Wellness for Mac, he had wicked gastrointestinal issues -- he was burping, farting, and had nasty poos. We stopped using it fairly quickly, LOL.

I gave Toby a chance on it, but his gas is still pretty frequent. Not sure how related it is, but his breath has gotten worse. He never had breath problems before this food. Now I just have to pick which one of the three other brands I want to try. I'm also open to other suggestions, but those are probably the best ones we carry.

Inara's on Wellness Core, which is their grain-free version, and she's doing beautifully on it.

I was just considering that one. Our GM claims it's the best food we carry, which is obviously dependent on the individual dog. And it doesn't cost much more, so maybe I will give it a go.

It's expensive but I definitely give it two thumbs up. Normally she eats the regular flavor but I had to get the ocean this time because they didn't have big bags of the regular. It smells gross (like fish, shockingly enough) and I'll be switching her back to the regular with the next bag. lol

Well, the 30 something lbs bag I was getting of Super5 lasted him a little over a month so in reality it's not really all that expensive. I'll probably go ahead and try out the Core then and see if that helps within a few bags.

Hum, Jessie was on Wellness super5mix a few years ago, back when they were a smaller company, and from one day to the next, she exploded in massive diarrhes from it... we tried all sorts of things and eveyr time we'd get her back on it the diarrhea came back... Since then she hasn't been the same dog gastrointestinally... :(

She is doing good on the Orijen fish, although blood tests and urine samples both show that she's not using all those proteins, and I'm considering a switch again.

funny you should mention that, actually. He has diarrhea right now, but I've just contributed it to him eating something he probably shouldn't have. We had another go around with diarrhea a few months ago but I attributed that to the fact that I FOUND him eating out of the garbage can. So not really sure what the real cause of it is, but now I'm not sure if I should try Solid Gold or Wellness CORE.

I don't know, for Jessie it was all of a sudden and she really had not eaten anything wrong (she's not very naughty with garbage and all that stuff)... I think, if Toby's doing good on that food, and only has diarrhea if he eats ''extras'', then he's probably fine on it, but nothing keeps you from trying something else. For me I try to find something that fits and stick to it, but it hasn't been easy.

He seems to be in perfect health other than his diarrhea right now. He plays, has good color in his gums, just regular old Toby, but this morning he STILL has diarrhea. O_o I'm almost wondering if I should grab my credit card and take him to a vet. But I'm going to start his food switch to either Core or one of the other two today, so hopefully it'll clear up before the 14th. I'm leaving him with my mom and going to see a friend for a week.

Agatha is on the Super5 fish stuff and is doing great!! She farts a lot, but since they don't stink, I could care less. She's always farted alot and since these are the only ones that don't peel the paint off my walls or melt my hair, toot away my sweet, toot away I say.

She's been on it for 6 months now and it's been wonderful. No rashes, no eye boogers, and the only instances of diarrhea have been easily attributable to her getting into stuff that is NOT her food (like half a meatball hoagie Friday night :mad2:)
Dropkick, Dropkid, and Agatha, of course!!

Why don't you try to fast him 12 hours (leave water) first to give his tummy a break (if you haven't done it already)? Then re-introduce small meals several times a day gradually, that may help. You can always give pedialyte if he seems a little dehydrated from the diarrhea.

Changing food may be a good idea, but maybe give the Wellness a try for Toby to get a bit better and then see? Or just do it, that also might just cure the diarrhea, depending if the food itself is causing the problem or if it's something else...

Well, I guess what I'll do is the 12 hr fasting, buy one more bag of the Super5 (I also use the fish one) and see how it goes for him for one more month. Anymore unexplained periods of diarrhea though, and I'm probably going to switch him just to see if it makes a difference. Maybe just a different type of Super5 or CORE would make the difference. We shall see.

I meant to say that Toby's farts lately have been absolutely RANK. But that's probably because he's having a little upset right now. Usually his farts aren't all that bad.
