What breed is this dog?

Anything that doesn't fit into the other three catagories

Postby Hoyden » March 24th, 2009, 6:26 pm

I was researching War dogs and dog armor and stumbled across this picture on a Military Strategy forum.

What breed is this dog? I can't seem to place it.

Mark said dobie too.

I compared him to pictures of dobies, but his muzzle isn't long or skinny enough, his head is more "blocky" looking, his neck is thicker, more muscular and he looks more solid than a dobie.

Maybe a working dobie, before the show ring folks got a hold of them?

It's also 80+/- years ago. Breeds change a LOT in that time.

It looks like a pic of a Dobie that my Chief of Police has in his office. That dog was from the 30s.

It kind of looks like a Canis Panther, but they weren't around back then.

Head reminds me of a Beauceron...the body reminds me of a small Great Dane.

Whatever he is he looks quite senior in that picture, wich may also alter his appearence.

Looks more Dane in type to me, almost like a cross between Dane and Dobe though.

The head is way too small to be a dane, I think it looks like a dobie.

Were Dane's heads always large?

Bigger than that dog's head, anyways.

Here's one from 1910, the proportions just look very different to me than the dog above.

Thanks folks :)

Tyras looks more like the Dane posted in this link to me. http://www.gdca.org/bissfuturity/1910.htm

If that dog is indeed a Dobie or a Dane, I wish they were still bred like that today because I love how he's put together. On the large side of a medium dog, solid build, muscular, short coat, blocky head, little bit of flews, but not enough to be spit flingers.

Tyras looks like his build would be ideal for someone who needed a service dog for stability & balance.

While I agree that his head is more in line with Dobermans of old, his coloration, body build, and the fact that he has a tail point towards Dane.

I think it's a Doberman as well. Old breed pictures look a lot like that - yes, pre-show ring. But the coloring is off for a Dobermann though.

Were Danes military dogs?

It definitely looks a lot like a Donovan, you're right Liz.

The coat is totally wrong for a Beauceron, but it reminds me of them as well.

I'm think it's a Deutsche Dogge or Boar Hound.
