Kato's on cephalexin for the same thing. He's also now taking claritin and his scratching stopped virtually overnight.

Is the claritin the same as human or is it for veterinary use only?

You should ask your vet to px Panalog cream, it's really handy for that kind of stuff (IF the bacteria involved is affected by it, I think it's pretty broad-spectrum, and anti-fungal as well) and it seriously helped my eczema at it's worst (I used it at work as a last resort a few times before my dermato appt.) so I can vouch for the anti-itch/inflammation AND healing angry skin properties...
