Dr. Pitcairn - Vitamin C?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby ccc2006 » April 15th, 2006, 7:12 am

I've been reading the book by Dr. Pitcairn, and it mentions supplementation of Vitamin C to act as a natural antihistamine.
It says to use 200 - 1000 mg. dependent on size of dog, but doesn't give any indication as to recommended mgs. for actual weights. Does anyone know what mg. to use for a 60 lb. dog?

All I know is you can overdose them to the tune of diarrhea :) be careful. LOL
I'd use around 200-500mg for a dog that size, no more.

Oh boy, don't want diarrhea to boot! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try that dosage for him.

Does the Vitamin C help with seasonal allergies?

I used it when Yaeger had Pano. But I did learn the hard way that too much make their stools VERY soft!

From what the book said, higher doses of Vitamin C act has a natural antihistamine, so I would assume that it should help with any type of allergies.
I'm really picking at straws myself here, but I thought what the heck, I'll try too.

Thanks! I have that book so I'll have to take a look... Right now so much is starting to bloom that my poor dog is getting the itchies.

Please let me know if it works...you can PM me....my puppy isn't itchy, but her eyes are runny (it's not an infection). The vet recommended a Benadryl (which, he said, might also make her sleepy...and if you knew my puppy, that would be a welcome change )...but I'd like to stay away from "drugs" if I can....

I used it for Vicki...I used up to 2,000 mg before her stool got soft...honestly, I didn't see that big of a difference in her itching. I was using it in combination with salmon oil and msm. I have read in a couple of different places that in order for vitamin C to be really effective in theraputic doses, it should be given intravenously.
