The piece of my heart named Baxter

Postby Christine Carr » December 11th, 2008, 5:34 pm

I don't know how to post a picture of him so here's a link to his residency, below is his tribute.

http://rainbowsbridge.com/residents/BAX ... sident.htm

I found this poem on the net and it felt right considering our battle with cancer. I've lost a friend, who will be with me always. From that first time he ate a 2 square foot hole in my brand new living room carpet, to when he "killed" every cushion on my couch, when he chewed my heels or my undergarments, I always knew he was the dog for me, I've been a fan of pits ever since. He was first diagnosed in October and the vet gave him just a few weeks, well we fooled them didn't we Pookey? You gave me an additional 10 months of love. I spoon fed you your dinner every night cause that is the only way you'd eat. You wouldn't even let your dad see you when you were weak. So many nights we sat up just you and I. Eating ice cubes to soothe your sore throat. The tumors grew too large and I couldn't let my best buddy suffocate so I did what I had to do to keep your dignity and your were the most dignified creature I'd ever had the pleasure to meet.
This is a tribute to you.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two --
these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

RIP handsome Baxter. :(

That poem was beautiful. Tear-jerking, but beautiful.

Such a nice tribute to your friend. RIP sweet boy. You are so loved.

This group has been hit hard by canine cancers in the past year. There are many of us who have walked in your shoes down that long road. I am sorry for your loss.

Cancer sucks. I lost my heart dog to it in August and I've already cried about him twice today.

I'm so sorry for your loss. That was a lovely tribute to a dog who obviously meant the world to you. RIP Baxter.
