Update Tuesday PM
After consulting with a vet at Texas A&M veterinary college, the tone from our vet has changed from guardedly optimistic to guarded. The consulting vet felt the biopsy report of the osteosarcoma being contained really does not buy us anything because of the rich source of blood flow through the bone. The recommendation was for Carboplatin to be administered, 5 treatments, 3 weeks apart.
Carboplatin is a very expensive drug. If administered at A&M, where they purchase quantities, it is $500/dose. We will be looking at somewhat more, but chose that route rather than commit to 5 six hour commutes to College Station.
Our thoughts were to give Trouble one treatment and see if she had any bad effects before committing to the full round of treatment. The vet is checking with his supplier to see if he can get the Carboplatin shipped to him next day delivery. We are looking at treatment beginning Thursday or Friday.
Prognosis, has not changed. With amputation only, about 3-4 months. With amputation and chemo, about 12 months with about a 20% chance of 2 years.
There is a chance we will need to pay for all five doses of Carboplatin, even if we choose to give her only one treatment. If that is the case, we would be willing to donate the remainder to a canine in need. I'm not sure what the shelf life is, but I may be posting the availability at some point. If you know someone who could benefit from this possible donation, please PM me so I can contact you the minute I know if it will become available.
Good thoughts and paws crossed for our sweetheart.
