I believe it's so they will "tip" at the top, rather than standing straight up.

Yup...the breeder asked if I wanted to learn how to do it. I said sure, and told her I'd give it a try. I'm not so good at it...and one is already untaped. :| Not such a big deal for a SD. ;)
