A full house!

Postby adoptanapbt » October 25th, 2008, 11:39 pm

So, in some self-flagelating moment, I decided to intentionally max out my house in terms of fosters. Current denizens of the zoo are the last of the summer's kittens, T'Pol:

Then came Gabriel (aka Gabby), yet another flame point and just the mellowest chatty cat you ever did meet:
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181 ... abriel.jpg

Taffy is a Merced rescue who is as sweet and sticky (ok, clingy) as her name, although her manners are not the greatest. She is now a YCSPCA foster and starts official boot camp tomorrow. At 39lbs, she is a little big to be a pocket pit, but she's tiny compared to everyone else in the house, so I think of her as my "small" dog.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p181 ... taffy2.jpg

I had a short-term YCSPCA foster who ended up getting adopted in a week, and while I was waiting to hear whether they needed me to take in another dog, I was negotiating with Merced who to take next. The night before I was to take 2 Merced dogs, YCSPCA got an owner surrender request for a leash-reactive, resource guarding herding mix. So, guess who gets the honor of doing her boot camp? :neener: Naturally, her name is Sugar:

And last, but not least, the male dog I requested to round out the estrogen-fest at the house. But no, not a bouncy puppy to help burn off energy for Desi & Taffy; I had to fall for this face:

What looks like saggy neck skin is actually a softball-sized (hopefully fatty) tumor, so YCSPCA and I are now trying to figure out who will do his surgeries & who will pay for it all. In the meantime, Barney is just happy to hang out in the yard and pee on things.

Barney is actually faily housebroken an really good with other dogs. He is WAY too interested in other cats for me to recommend him for a home with cats or possibly small pets. He pulls like the dickens on leash, but I'm going to try out a Sense-ation harness (or possibly a headcollar, but nothing around his neck until that mass is removed) on him after he's put on some weight and settled in a little more.

Taffy is shy on leash, but if she trusts her walker, she goes willingly. She hasn't had an accident since the first couple days she was here, and she's gotten used to her crate. She is interested in cats, but has only tried to play with them. She can play rudely with other dogs, so she would do best with a confident, laidback male for her to beat up.

So, Taffy had to go back in today because the entire leg with the (opened) foxtail abscess had completely swollen up. Let's hope they find it for sure this time. :sad2:

Barney has KCS in his right eye, so I'm trying saline flushes & artificial tears for now to see if that helps the green discharge. UCD can't get him in until 12/1, so he gets to keep the lumps on his throat & between his legs for another month. UCD is free, so no arguing with the scheduling. Please keep good thoughts for that mass on his throat, because if it's anything but a lipoma, UCD may not do the surgery through their vet student program, and as it is they probably won't cut back the gingival hyperplasia, but the mass/castration are more important! On the up side, he has gained 5lbs in less than a week and has another 5-10 to go!

Awesome! I just got a call from my mom that she & her husband are giving up the condo due to financial losses at the clinic & they'll be moving back into her house. So...I have to move at the beginning of the year. Well, I don't have to,but I don't like her husband or the idea of living with my mother at my age. :rolleyes2:

I'm trying to get as many fosters as possible placed by the end of the year. If anyone is interested in my zoo, I'll be happy to help with transport, etc.

So, back to the rescue portion: Petfinder links for those interested

Yes, I'm afraid I'm responsible for their lame bios...

It looks like I may have to decide to euthanize Barney. He's snapping more often at the other dogs over attention/toys and that on top of his cat chasing/snapping has made new home requirements very low. That's assuming there was a large pool of people wanting 75lb 8-9yr old dogs with KCS. UCD was scheduled to take him 12/1 for neuter/mass removal, but they just cut their student spay/neuter program for YCSPCA and we don't know yet whether they'll honor the commitments they made before the budget cuts. The stress of juggling him with the other dogs, working 6 days a week, trying to continue with renovations before I move, packing, and househunting is just making this a no go. I feel like I failed him... :sad2:

Barney solved my dilemma when he went to UCD this week. His tumor is inoperable. He also had a 2nd tumor on one of his testicles. He should have died on a squishy bed in his owner's home!

Good night big slobbery prince....
