Grand Rapids Police officer kills pit bull that attacked child

GRAND RAPIDS -- Police shot and killed a pit bull this afternoon after it attacked a child near Darwin Avenue SW and Elm Street.

The child's injuries and condition were not immediately known, although a resident in the area said the child was bitten in the leg.

Police responded to the neighborhood shortly after noon today on the report of the dog attack and four or five pit bulls running loose in the area.

While Kent County animal control officers managed to capture all but one of the dogs, that animal was too aggressive, police said. A Grand Rapids police officer used a shotgun to kill the animal, Sgt. Jessica Payne said.
