Pit bull attack fuels cry
By MATT KIELTYKA, 24 HOURS
Another pit bull attack has again drawn calls to consider banning the canines.
Sunday's attack in Surrey re-ignited the ban debate, but Coun. Tim Stevenson - who broached the topic in 2005 - says Vancouver can't go it alone and needs the co-operation of other municipalities.
Now, he wants the provincial government to step in and, at the very least, look into Ontario's existing pit bull ban.
Ontario outlawed the sale of pitbulls in 2005 and required all existing owners to get their pets spayed or neutered.
"The time has long since come," Stevenson told 24 hours yesterday. "I think there is enough evidence in other places to evaluate how well [a ban] works."
Yesterday after Vancouver police found their owner's van, the BCSPCA seized the four pit bulls that attacked Jody Tomlinson and his dog Sunday, near 80th Avenue and 146th Street.
The dog owner, who has not been named, has been interviewed and released without charges.
Surrey RCMP say they are still investigating the latest attack.
