Looks like a swing in our favor in Missouri!!!

Pits in the news and info on Breed Specific Legislation.

Postby pmashaney81 » February 21st, 2008, 12:36 am

An obstacle of Jules and I moving to MO is with the BSL that is all over Clay county which is where all of my family lives. It looks like the state legislature is taking care of it. I just think it is kind of ironic that the senator introducing the bill had the last name of Justus. It might be a sign.

SB 886 Allows any municipality to adopt ordinances, orders, or regulations to control dangerous dogs, provided that no such ordinances, orders, or regulations are specific to breed

Missouri SB 886 -- CALL Today!
SB 886, a bill to prevent ordinances to enact legislation base on breed, has been sent to the Senate Economic Development, Tourism and Local Government committee. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, February 20 at 2:00 PM in Jefferson City. Please show your support for this bill in its originally written form. It has been rumored that there are groups trying to make changes to what is a very well researched and written bill, so it is important to note that you support the bill in its original form.

This is a bill that is supported by most major animal welfare groups, including the ASPCA, Missouri Alliance for Animals League, Kansas City Dog Advocates, Mid America Bully Breed Rescue, and many others.

Missouri is one of the few states in the country that has seen a rise in canine euthanasia over the past few years, in large part due to several of the state's largest cities insisting passing breed specific ordinances in spite of recommendations by animal welfare organizations.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE politely contact the members of the Senate Economic Development, Tourism and Local Government committee. Phone calls or faxing is best at this late hour. Don't worry about making a speech, all you need to do is call and say, "I support SB 886 in it's original form." Then, follow up with a fax or email with more information.

LOBBY FOR ANIMALS Missouri: SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed

SB 886—Dangerous Dogs
Sponsor(s): Senator Jolie Justus
ASPCA Position: Support
Action Needed: None

Update, 5/19/08—Unfortunately, Missouri's legislative session ended before this bill could be passed. Thank you for your support.

Sponsored by Senator Jolie Justus, SB 886 would allow any Missouri village, town or city to adopt regulations to control vicious or dangerous dogs—but importantly, the bill prevents communities from discriminating against any breed of dog.

Dogs are individuals: any dog can bite. Citizens should be protected from vicious and dangerous dogs of all breeds or mixes. Discriminating against certain breeds of dogs fails to protect the public and penalizes responsible dog owners.
Judge the deed, not the breed.

I think you need to write Justus a letter - and, make the name connection. Ask him to reintroduce this session. Be sure to mention that you can't move there - thus withholding revenue from their tax base - until BSL is prohibited in the state.
