Postby gayrghts » August 13th, 2008, 6:39 am

I got a shipment from a group that we call a co op yesterday....

some of the raw food was for people, some for dogs....

i got 3 things that i had not ordered....
but i ddin't know what they were when i got them...

omg barf

3 tubes.... 5 lbs each....
1 was chunks of liver.... LARGE cubes.... ok no problem
2nd was ground beef, we think heart
3rd was this dark brown/green ground substance.... that STUNK!!!!!!! :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

I am guessing it was tripe.... i have no clue, but we were discussing it, as i was bagging everything, and a friend said, i hope your dogs will eat this... it smells nasty...
i offered a bite or 2 to each of them and they scarfed it down.... so go figure....
i put a small amt of that with liver and ground heart and then some reg ground beef..... cuz ugggg

'Cause that's where poop is made!!

I don't feed tripe simply because I can't stand the smell myself. Wally always looked at me like I was trying to kill him when I tried to get him to eat it.

I need to find my beef heart pics . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripe
Beef tripe is usually made from only the first of three cow's stomachs, the rumen (blanket/flat/smooth tripe), the reticulum (honeycomb and pocket tripe), and the omasum (book/bible/leaf tripe). Abomasum (reed) tripe is seen much less frequently, owing to its glandular tissue content. Tripe is also produced from sheep, goats, and pigs. Unwashed (or "green") tripe includes some of the stomach's last content, smells very unappetizing and is unsuitable for human consumption, but is a favorite of many dogs and other carnivores and is often used in dog food. It is called green, although its colour is often brown or grey, because of its high chlorophyll content from undigested grass. For human consumption, tripe must be washed and meticulously cleaned.

That was my first thought too, tripe.

Ugh, I just made my barf burgers yesterday and mixed in green tripe. That stuff is beyond awful. I got six 2 lb. containers that I have been rationing out VERY sparingly because the stuff makes me gag. Not ordering that again.

FYI - I order it through our co-op. I bought a case of it in 1lb containers but they have different sizes. All of my guys go nuts for it and if you serve it semi frozen there is very little smell

Matt I know you order this stuff every month because I see your order and my hat is OFF to you lol I can't stomach the stuff. I am actually ready to give away the last containers I have just to get it out of my freezer!

I'll buy the containers off of you if you want.

I'm ordering from them this month actually.
