Police kill animal after vicious attack on man

It was the screaming that woke Safia Adam up. But what was happening in the street is what kept her awake.

"She was screaming so loud, I don't even know how to describe it," Ms. Adam said from the front porch of her home on the south side of Caldwell Avenue on Saturday. "She kept screaming: Call the police!"

James Jackson, who lives in a high-rise apartment on the other side of the street, heard a woman yelling: "911! Call 911!"

The screaming was coming from a woman who could not stop her dog - a light-coloured pit bull mix named Nike - as it attacked a 21-year-old man about two hours before sunrise on Saturday.

Police say a couple and two other women - one of whom had the dog on a leash - were walking through the neighbourhood about 4 a.m., near Caldwell Avenue and Medford Street.

When the woman walking the dog encouraged one of the other women to pet the dog, it lunged at her, pulling away from the grip of its leash.

She ran away and scrambled onto a nearby car. When that woman's boyfriend called to the dog, police say it turned on him - which lead to the melee that woke up the neighbourhood.

Ms. Adam said the man was shaking "around like a ragdoll," trying to free himself from the dog.

She said she it hard to watch the "vicious attack."

"It was just absolutely disgusting," she said.

Lamby Nshimiyimana ran to the scene when he found out what was happening - because he knew the dog well, and he knew the people who were screaming in the street.

From what he could see, the man being attacked was in a fight for his life.

"He was literally wrestling a dog like he was fighting a lion," Mr. Nshimiyimana said, noting that the man tried to knock Nike away from his body, and was at one point rolling around on the street.

Police arrived at the scene to find the attack still taking place, and the decision was made to intervene.

A male officer hit the dog with his baton, which caused the dog to turn his attack towards the officer.

The dog lunged, and the officer shot it in the face and shoulder. Nike ran away, but was captured shortly thereafter.

Mr. Jackson said the woman who had been walking the dog appeared to be "hysterical" and was yelling at the officers not to take the dog away.

Mr. Nshimiyimana said the woman was upset because the dog was owned by her brother, and he would not have any say whether the dog would be destroyed.

The dog was later euthanized by a local veterinary service.

Along the sidewalk on the north side of Caldwell Avenue on Saturday, small droplets of blood could be seen that had dripped from the man's wounds earlier in the day, and thick pools of blood were drying out where the dog had lain bleeding after being apprehended.

Police said the man who was attacked was taken to hospital for severe bites and puncture wounds to both of his arms. The full extent of his injuries is unknown.

He could not be reached for comment on Saturday afternoon.
