Help!!! Pregnant and giving birth!?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby msvette2u » March 27th, 2006, 6:38 pm

The bitch @ my shelter is sooo pregnant. Today she had a string of mucous coming out of her vagina and there's still some discharge. Is this labor!??
In preparation, assuming it is, we brought her home and put her in a crate in a quiet room (my son's room) just in case she's going to have them soon.

Labor times are different for each dog.

When it is getting closer she will begin doing more nesting behaviors
* Temperature will drop to 98 degrees or so...

* Refusal to eat

* Starts looking for a quiet safe place to whelp

* can't seem to get comfortable

* Mucus Discharge

pre labor

Digging/nesting
Panting and or whining
Staring at her rear end
Constantly Licking vulva
Mild Contractions leading to

Full labor
Hard Contractions
Water Breaking
Grunting and pushing
Visible sign of the First pup and delivery (Whelp)

Do you have a whelping box or area set up for her. If not that will be the first thing you need to do and soon this way she has a place where she feels safe

A kiddy pool with some towels in it works and is good for easy clean up. you can get an x-pen for around it as they get older

Lots of spare clean towels

a suction tool so if you have to clean out their air ways

scissors, thread to tie off the cords if needed and watered down iodine to clean by the umbilical cord

a smaller warm box to move pups away from mama as she is delivering so they don't get squashed. a hot water bottle to keep them warm while mama is delivering another pup

keep the room toasty warm

Keep the emergency vet # on hand

don't forget a camera for lots of picts too

I like to have a scale to weigh the pups to monitor their growth

thermometer to check on the mama

Don't let the mama eat all the afterbirths or she'll get the runs

Start collecting newspaper ASAP. You'll need it when the lil poopers get going LOL

Lots of luck.

If the dog seems to be in any type of distress or is doing heavy straining for a long period of time with no puppies produced call a vet immediately

Sometimes walking the dog around can help stimulate birth . A nervous mama needs a lot of comforting and neeeds you calm. So prepare yourself for every possible thing that can happen and stay calm.

What a great checklist. Thanks for posting that (though hopefully I will never be in that position myself!).

How is it all going????

I was just kidding about the water. She still hasn't had them but she's had more mucous discharge. Not colored or anything, but just there. She's close, I can tell. Restless. But still eating. But then she was starving when I found her.

Photo update!!

BTW I gave her a bath for the discriminating eye, her coat is much more glossy tonight. I wanted her teats clean for her babies...she was DIRTY too!!

I think it was to give the expectant Daddy something to do while his wife was having the kid!? LOL
Yesterday I told my husband "Boil some water!" and he was like "I'm not boiling anything!" His theory is, dogs do it all the time, she'll be fine ;)
I'm kind of middle of the road. The ones I've had at the shelter before always did OK (I'd come in to work and voila! There were puppies) but we fostered a few that had some minor complications, not to the point they needed a vet but definately it helped to BE THERE with them when they were in labor!
I have successfully resuscitated a puppy once but it has been a few years...

I know. She can barely move around. She groans when she has to move. It's got to be soon...

Well no puppies as of this AM but she refused food then threw up dinner from last night. So it could be soon. She's just curled up resting right now...

I took her temp and it's up, 102.9, so she's going to the vet at 8am. Wish us luck.

I took her to the vet and she began having them there.
Sadly, 4 were born deceased. There are three live ones and they are doing well. Mom's tired as can be. I've got photos but can't upload them until she's done and she's got some still inside her!

ETA: 4 healthy ones. She's not quite done yet. Another one was born deceased-- he was pure white with one round black spot around his eye
:-(

So sorry that she lost some! That is just always heartbreaking. At least they have good forever homes already though... that is a good way to look at it I guess.

I hope everything else goes well. Keep us updated!!!
