Limping problem

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby luvmyangels » March 27th, 2006, 3:00 pm

About 2 weeks ago, my husband let the dogs out in the morning. When Knuckles came in he was limping on his front leg. There was no fighting or anything going on while they were out since they were being watched. I checked his leg and paw to see if there was anything evident wrong. I flexed his leg and no response. It seemed to get better over the next week. Last night we went for a walk and I noticed he looked off again. I called the vet this morning and we have an appointment this week. I am wondering if it could be growing pains or something else. Any thoughts?

He is 8 months now. I do not have any background on him since he was confiscated at a very very young age. I will bring this up to the vet and see what they think it is. Thank you for the information.

Justice did something to her leg when she was about that age. She limped but we couldn't find the source of her pain. The vet gave her rymadil & told me to keep her calm, after 3 days she was fine & has never limped again. It could be growing pains, or a strain from jumping. We think Justice hurt hers jumping on the bed.

keep me posted on what the vet says if you will. chub is 8 months old now to and he started limping the other day as well. i gave him 1/2 a rymadil and he was fine for the rest of the night and now he just limps if he plays hard with me. I have the left over rymadil from when he broke his leg in december.

i think chubs is related to his broken leg. i dont think that it healed right. but then on the other hand he just now started limping again and hes been out of the cast since january.

Did you check the paw pads for anything stuck in them?

My guy had a terrible limp that I couldn't figure out, until I finally checked his paw and found a splinter!

8 mos. is a good age for Pano. You know it is that if you squeeze the forearm of the dog and they yelp with pain.
Our Yaeger had it so bad he laid around moaning. I gave him pain killers for it and he got better.
BUT it could be something worse so it's a good idea to get it checked out.

Try just taking it easy for a week and giving him some baby asparin (NOT tylenol). My dogs occasionally wiull pull something, and they get over it through crate rest for a while.

This is true for dogs with more severe cases of Pano but not always a tell tale sign. Milder cases can cause limping without visible pain upon palpation and can also cause a dog to stand on three legs when resting or just toe down on the affected leg without bearing a lot of weight on it.

There could be many other causes for the limping that are severe like an elbow problem so I woud advise taking the dog to the vet and taking some x-rays if it does not resolve with strict rest for a couple of days.

Well I went to the vet with all 3 dogs tonite because 2 of them needed their heartworm blood test. I think it was a little overwhelming for the vet. I mentioned pano and she checked only his front legs because that is where I had seen him limping. She squeezed his forearms and said if he did not have discomfort then he doesn't have it. In talking with my mother she asked why did the vet not check his back legs. My mom thinks that maybe the pain is coming from the back and not the front. In the end the vet thinks he just hurt himself and if I see him limping to give him Bayer aspirin. If I do not see a change within the next week or so I will go and see the main vet of the practice.

I still feel there is something more. But I will keep a close on him.

Mary Ann it happened to me with Maya at winter time...After a huge playtime she was limping.I gave her Aspirin for a couple of days, and it worked! And cut the playtime until he's better (I know It's not easy..)Good luck!

Hi! Since I took Knuckles to the vet I have been watching him and even after rest he is still limping. He has grown a bit but his right front leg looks to be stiff when he walks. I called to get an appointment with another vet and I have to wait till May 1st. I am going to video him this time so that the vet can see what I am seeing. Has anyone ever taken their dog to a Holistic Vet? There is one out further east on the island that is highly recommended and he also does accupuncture. I am going to request an x-ray of his leg to see if there is something that they can't see going on. I don't know if at this point I should take him to a specialist. Any suggestions?? Knuckles is now 9 months.

get xrays done, and have him tested for lyme disease too, just to rule that out.. my gsd had pano in her backleg, and xrays showed really bad HD at the time as well, since its Knuckles front leg it couldbe something different.. and smackyour regular vet for not taking xrays of his front leg when you told her he was limping..
