What is Dock Diving?

Dock Diving is a sport where a dog and their handler/s compete against other teams. Dogs run down a dock (often for a toy) and jump into water, with the distance judged from the end of the dock to the base of the dog’s tail. Each competitor gets two jumps per round, with the longer distance of the two jumps counting as their score. For title purposes, the dog’s score is placed into a division according to the distance. The various divisions, according to different dock diving groups, are as follows.....

It looks like so much fun, but I only have one dog that will dive...and he's ten with arthritis...not exactly competition material. ;)

We have a group in our area, and we're looking to team up with them next spring for a dock diving/flyball tournament...should be fun! We do therapy and assistance dog work with one of their members...that's how we hooked up!

I don't want to hijack the thread...but Sparky will be a natural, he took to swimming immediately...and he is totally ball crazed! I can't wait to get him chasing his balls into the lake this summer...he was only maybe 13 or 14 weeks old in this video

Hi everyone interested in dock diving! :greenWave:

The best way to get involved is to sign up for one of the forums of the groups that do dock diving and ask questions there. I learned so much from all the people there. :P Not to pimp out our web site, but if you go to and go to the "Links" page, it has links to the 3 main groups that put on events.

Going to an event was how we learned about the sport. I just signed us up and off we went. Pretty naive, but it worked and we are addicted! 8)

Basically, if your dog likes a floatable toy, has a lot of toy drive, and likes the water, that is all you really need to get started. There are events all across the country with various organizations.

Are there any specific questions I can help answer?

For competitions called Big Air, it is all about the distance. Some groups give ya "bonus" points for catching it, but it is not required. Your score for a round (often called a wave, or splash) is solely based on the distance of your dog's best jump. So if Colby jumped 19'6" and 21'2", his score would be recorded as 21'2" for that round, regardless of whether or not he caught a toy (some dogs, like our other dog Parker, don't really even care if there is a toy. He is a thrill seeker, I guess, and just does it on his own). 8)

There is a game, offered through Ultimate Air Dogs, that is called Catcg It! In Catch It!, the dog's jump only counts if the toy is caught. You get 2 jumps, and the score is by adding the distances of the jumps(s) that the dog caught it. For example, last time Colby played, he caught the the first toy at 19'4", but missed the toy the second jump, and jumped another almost 20'. His total score for Catch It! was 19'4".

What else can I help with???

Oh, great! Maya is done with her heat?

I tried to get both days off so I could go to the weight pull one day, then the dock diving the next, but no such luck.

When Abraham & Eggs gets a little older, weight pulling will be on his list of activities, if he enjoys it. :sumo: He certainly has the build for it, being the freak of nature he is.

I won't be upset if you want to see weight pulling on Sunday instead. That is some cool stuff!! :bounce:
