We had just moved into our house and I wanted a friend for Louie, my Lab. We found an adorable shep/husky puppy at a local rescue (Bearman!). On a very cold New Years Day, I noticed a black Lab/Chow mix standing in the street in front of my house, walking over to passing cars and sniffing as they slowed down. Then he would sit on the side and wait patiently for the next one.
He was skiddish, but friendly. I didn’t know any neighbors, so I brought him into the garage for the night. I felt bad because my two were in the warm house, but at least this one would be safe and fed.
The next day I had my son and his friend take the dog throughout the neighborhood and ask if anyone recognized him. An hour later, I see my son walking back with an empty leash.
It turns out, the dog broke loose from my son’s hands and ran a mile back to my house. He was now and curled up in my garage.
This time, when night fell, I put the visiting dog in the den, with baby gates up. In the morning, I wake up to see him curled up in a small corner, next to my bed. He jumped the gate and found his way upstairs to our room.
My husband said, “I think you have a third dog.â€
