ER Vet Visit

Here is where we can discuss canine cancers and treatment options to create a support system for those dealing with the disease.

Just a quick update, because I'm sooo tired...

I brought Mick to the oncologist this morning, since he had two episodes of very bloody diarrhea and was very lethargic, and our doctor got very concerned... as did I.
Well... $800.00 and 16 hours later we are back home - Mick is currently snoring on my bed.
They did blood tests and a urine test, and we don't really know what caused it... but the little $hithead put up a fight-and-a-half at the office... he "came right back to life" as soon as we got there and he recognized the building - and it was "on"! :o
Our oncologist was afraid to sedate him, because his blood pressure was so low that they thought he might go into shock... and they needed to get some fluids into him fast when we got there. I wrestled Baby Cow into position, they slapped an IV on him, and then everyone left the room in a hurry so I could take off his muzzle since he started vomiting.
When the vet techs had to come in for blood work and to check the IV I slapped the muzzle back on and pinned him down, so they could work on him. We did this on and off for about 12 hours and I'm about to pass out.
He is re-hydrated and on antibiotics as a preventative measure, and they let me take him home, because he was way too stressed to spend the night... OMG, and for a "sick" dog he gave us a run for our money!
Dr. Correa still wants to go ahead w/the chemo treatment on Tuesday if he stays stable, and I'm soo looking forward to it... at least she has a sense of humor about the whole thing. She said working w/Mick is like jumping out of an air plane and hoping that the parachute opens on the way down into shark-infested waters... I think it's more like trying to grab a hold of a greased pig w/oil on your hands. :D
Anyway - his blood work showed no abnormalities or infections in regards to the bloody diarrhea... they think it might be a viral thing or even stress-related... :|

Yep... and on the way into the house we had to make a quick stop for a palm leaf which I graciously accepted as an apology for having been head-butted and kicked (but NOT bitten or growled at) about 300 times today... :x

Gotta love the little stink pot... :)

oh wow, mick sounds like a real treasure at the clinic :D

I'm glad that your Doc has a sense of humor about it (its the only way to do it! :lol3: )

I'm also glad that he's feeling better, this is the most important part :)
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

I think we should actually be glad he kept his "spunkiness". If he was calm and licking everyone in the Vet's office, we would think he needed to see Dr. Phil.

The palm leaf is just the icing on the cake. :giggle:

Hang in there, Christine. :hug3:

Good lord, what a fiasco! lol I was getting so worried when we hadn't heard from you or Jessica, so I'm glad things are alright. Perhaps next time you could have Jessica get some pics of you wrestling him down?

Give that shark some lovin' for me!

Joyce... Dr. Correa is convinced that Mick will learn to "like" the office visits, her, and the staff...
I'm thinking she might need Dr. Phil more than he does.
But I DO like her... optimism... :lol3:

I am keeping my fingers crossed, I once heard that the more sick people get from chemo, it's doing a better job...could be a false fact, but I am hopeful that the chemo is doing it's job...

Christine, I'm SO sorry...Big hugs to you and Mick. Stress is really hard on a dog as is the chemo (did the oncologist say it could be a result of the chemo)....I hope he's feeling better this morning...

I'm sure the palm leaf made it all better, though.

Oh, and I'm hoping you took him to the "nice" vet clinic...

I took him to the Oncologist... she came in early on Sunday to see him and fix him up...
Actually, the first ER I took Mick to is also the local cancer clinic, but wild horses and a substantial discount couldn't drag me there ever again.
Dr. Correa is a very highly regarded specialist, and I like her a lot... and what's more important - she's seen The Beast in action and still thinks he's cute. :D

I am so glad to hear something a little positive this morning! I was worried when we didnt hear much yesterday!

Sounds like you had a busy day yesterday! I bet your are so muscular from wrestling 'cow' to the ground! And it is always good to have a vet that loves the big ol lug even though she thinks he will like her some day!

I hope your sleep was very restful! And bringing you the palm leaf had to make you smile after that frustrating day!

Hey Mick had to make sure his Doc saw the real thing and still likes him...don't we all hope for that. Shark infested waters...that sounds like a pretty good description.

Okay, so Christine, you win yesterday's bull riding prize!
