My Dog Needs a Job

Weight pull, Protection, Agility, Flyball... you name it!

Postby pitbullmamaliz » January 6th, 2008, 10:41 am

Wasn't his leg injured as a pup? I don't know if weight pull would be a good idea because of that. I may be wrong though.

There's agility, flyball, therapy dog, etc. The world is open!

we are doing tracking with the local schutzhund club...my dog is required to follow my footsteps over mixed terrain out doors, and she is expected to do it with accuracy...right now I am dropping bits of kibble in my steps, we are at every third step with a bit of kibble...I am journalling each training session with her and focusing on what she is not doing correctly, asking questions from the seasoned people, and working to fix that problem at the next training session...it's very rewarding and low impact!

We are working on Thorne's intensity right now because we are very new at it...her nose needs to be on the ground and she gets distracted and lifts her nose and looks around to scent the air when she should be scenting the ground

Flyball:Flyball is a team sport for dogs that was invented in California in the late 70's. Legend has it that Herbert Wagner first showed it on the Johnny Carson Show to millions of Americans. Soon afterwards dog trainers and dog clubs were making and using Flyball Boxes. In the early 80's the sport became so popular that the North American Flyball Association (NAFA) was formed and they are the worldwide authority for Flyball.

Flyball Box

Flyball is a relay race with 4 dogs on a team. The course consists of a starting line, 4 hurdles spaced 10 feet apart and a box. The first hurdle is 6 feet from the start line and the box is 15 feet from the last hurdle for a 51 foot overall length. The dogs jump the hurdles and steps on a spring loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball. The dog catches the tennis ball and then runs back over the 4 hurdles. When the dog crosses the starting line the next dog goes. The first team to have all 4 dogs run without errors wins the heat. Tournaments are usually organized in either a double elimination or round robin foramt. Double elimination is usually best of 3 or best of 5. Round robin is usually best 3 out of 5 and the first team to win 3 heats receives 1 point towards their standing in the tournament.

The hurdles' height are dependent on the height of the dogs in the team -- 4" below the shoulder height of the shortest dog. 8" is the minimum height and 16" is the maximum height.

The fastest time is 15.43 seconds by SpringLoaded from Michigan, USA..

Even obedience (high level) is a job...

For many dogs I also suggest a kind of NILIF: where they not only earn their freedom in the home by doing basic obedience, but they also learn common service dog tasks such as picking things up, turning lights on and off, etc. This keeps the dog on it's toes as to when you'll ask it to perform a task, thus giving it a job.

Other than that you have weight pull, agility, freestyle, obedience, flyball, tracking, etc etc etc

The options are endless :) Just keep in mind that for a young dog who's growth plates haven't closed yet you won't be able to do anything 100%. And since your pup had a leg injury I would definitely double check with the vet before you start anything.

Even doing pet tricks could be a job...I mean, I've got Rocky...he can't do a whole lot b/c he's, well, Rocky...but I thought it would be fun to teach him pet tricks...something he could succeed at...

Very true...anything where a dog succeeds makes them feel like they are doing something...
