Anatomy of a training trial - Intermediate - DSO 2007

Weight pull, Protection, Agility, Flyball... you name it!

Postby mnp13 » August 29th, 2007, 4:41 pm

And by popular demand... here is the intermediate!

We start off with the day's decoy team
Image

like beginner, you can have a prong collar on your dog for a 5 point deduction. You can also have
a pull tab on the prong. You can't have a regular leash on the dog though, but you can have it with you
incase you need to switch to training mode.

The convicts are ready and waiting
Image

Again, we start in jail, with our dog loose next to us
Image

Position doesn't matter, though you get extra points for good handling. Starting
off with your back to the decoy keeps your dog from bolting out when the decoy opens
the cell and runs away.
Image

now, we head to the wall, time to go under again!
Image
Image

after your breather next to the shed, you head to the ginormous a frame again. It's a little
higher this time around.
Image

Put your dog in a stay and go over
Image
Image

sometimes the people stayed while the dog went over
Image

put your dog in a stay again and get yourself to the other side
Image

check in with the shooter
Image
Image

done with that!
Image

on to the shooting range, which is twice as long this time around! It turns out that
all the misses in Beginner were on purpose... no such luck in intermediate!
Image

RUN!!!
Image
Image

Use whatever you can to protect yourself
Image

Near miss!
Image

Sometimes a good idea
Image
backfires
Image

Safe on the other side
Image

Now, on to deal with the razor wire
Image

under we go!
Image

safe!
Image

team work gets you through
Image

don't forget the all-important black box
Image

the PERSON gets the black box!
Image

ok fine, the person carries both
Image

back to jail to exchange your box (or not) and then head to protection.

Our fist exercise is the defense of handler. You put your dog in the car, and then go to the back
to "pump gas"
Image

A stranger approaches and talks to you
Image

sometimes the strangers are...
Image
strange
Image

Then again, sometimes the handler is even more strange
Image

And then.. he attacks!
Image

Your dog comes to save you
Image
Image
Image
Image

Tell that bad guy to freeze, out your dog and go get him
Image

Now, on to "Air conditioning." You are stuck in traffic, it's hot and your a/c is broken.
you put your dog in the back and roll your window down. A bad guy walks up to your car
Image

and reaches in to steal your bag out of the front seat!
Image

no luck this time
Image
Image

some came out to get the bag
Image

the bad guy may have gotten it, but that doesn't mean he can keep it.
Image

back in the car we go
Image

the final exercise is defense of handler. you put your dog in a position of control and walk away.
Image
Image

a decoy approaches
Image

and grabs you
Image

sometimes the unexpected happens
Image

your dog comes into the rescue!
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

all done!

Awesome shots!!! How many times did you have to carry Riggs?

I said this before, but I'll say it again...that looks like so much fun! Xander wants to play! He loves tugging and running and jumping...oh wait, he can just do that in flyball and save me money. :D

Great pics and commentary, again! Love the ducking and running pics...made me giggle

Just the once. He refused to give up the box, so I finally picked him up in one arm and the box in the other.

yup, that dot is a paint ball. One of the pictures in Advanced has two paint balls in it.

Yes, Brad was trying to use the "spotter" as a human shield. Unfortunately, his dog had other ideas! The spotter was available to help you with the A-frame if you were uncomfortable with doing it or were worried about your dog falling. You could call the spotter without losing points. Everyone was quite confused when Brad started yelling "spotter" when he got to the corridor, but no one said he couldn't do it!

Cheryl has a rule at the DSO, don't ever say "Can I?" because the answer is "Yes." So you are allowed to be as creative as you want to get through the senarios.

I went first in Intermediate, so I didn't get the benefit of watching other competitors to steal ideas. Some people left the back door of the car open for the "pumping gas" senario so the dog came right out, no problem. I didn't think of that, so it took Riggs a while to get to me because he was in the back of the car barking through the window. I had to push the decoy backwards along the side of the car so that Riggs moved through the car and then used the open window.
