I think Malinois are just stunning dogs. Is there a 'distant relationship' between Mals and German Sheps?
Yes, there is...well, sort of...Mals are a member of the class of dogs known as Belgian Shepherd. There were 3 original Belgian Shepherds recognized in 1891: Mechelse (Malinois, short-haired), Groenendaeler (long-haired black) and Tervuerense (red-brown long haired), and Laekense (rough-haired). Today, there are 4 members, because Tervuren and Groenendale are separate.
For the longest time, St. Hubertus (FCI) would not allow the entrance of this Shepherd breed into the registry b/c it was reserved for dignified breeds (such as the collie or borzoi)...
However, the belgian shepherd gained popularity, and the first public contest for this breed was help in 1903. The first prize was awarded to a malinois named Cora. Cora was mated with Tomy, and the two of them are the recognized parents of the malinois breed.
Most malinois today are considered a mixed breed, although they look characteristically malinois (black mask, etc)...
