Kane

Postby pitbullmamaliz » May 11th, 2007, 10:15 pm

We put one of the foster dogs to sleep yesterday. We had had him for over a year. His story will break your heart - he lived with a family that abused both him and the son. Kane would try to defend the son and of course get beaten for doing so. Finally the dad got tired of Kane, and to punish his son he broke Kane's front leg and tied him into an alley, left him to die. Fortunately Kane was found and my rescue took him in. We fixed the leg, which had already started to set on its own, and tried to fix him mentally. He was an amazingly sweet dog 99% of the time, but he was very fearful towards different people - children, men w/hats/sunglasses/beer bottles, etc. We worked hard with Kane for over a year, hoping we could heal him mentally. However, he bit one person, and snapped/growled at several others over the past couple of months. A behaviorist began working with him, took him into his home, and was working miracles. But Kane bit him too. He was just too damaged by the time we saved him.

So the difficult decision was made, and he was euthanized on 5/10/07, at 5:10pm. There were 5 people in the room that had loved him, and he died knowing he was loved.

He will forever haunt our hearts, making us wonder if we did the right thing.

RIP, sweet Kane - it wasn't your fault.

Awww he was beautiful! RIP Kane :( I'm sure he knows how much he was loved, and how very hard you all tried!

What happened to the SOB that abused him?

I'm not sure if anything happened to the *insert choice words here* that tortured poor Kane. Why should anything? He was only a dog. (and yes, that was very sarcastic - it angers me beyond belief that poor Kane had to die because he was born into the wrong hands).

Thank you all for your condolences.

Sorry, should have clarified - when I said "son," I meant the human son.

Thank you all for the kind words.

I think I jumped to conclusions, forgetting how cruel humans can be to their children. What a wonderful dog, protecting a child.

Again, my condolences.

I am so sorry you had to make that hard decision. He will never again know the cruelty of human hands, he died knowing the goodness that can come from them. RIP Kane.
