each state farm office is independently owned, so they can say no to pitbulls. All State and State farm will insure them, you just have to find an agent who will.. you can also try Farmers, or use the Prime Ins link they do homeowners too for dog owners.. start lookng now, as september is around the corner.. also, ask you current agent to show you the rule that states no pit bulls

We found someone through Farmer's. :)

I'm pretty happy about it - they had a lower bid not only for our home insurance, but our auto, too! He said they didn't have any restricted breeds... though I guess if it's like State Farm, if could just be the individual agent?

sweeeet. :D

Liberty Mutual, and we're in Mass.

I did not know that Liberty Mutual insures Pit Bulls. Generally Mass. Property Insurance (Mass fair plan) is the only insurance that insures Pit Bull types. But I could be wrong.

State Farm doesn't cover Massachusetts unfortunately. Mass Insurance companies have ridiculous breed restrictions.

I am moving to a new house and I contacted State Farm and they told me there would no problem covering Knuckles and they even came in $400.00 less than the quote I got from my current insurance company.

Now, I'm not just suggesting this b/c we own "pit bulls", but rather because we own dogs period. I suggest getting a $100,000 liability policy. We started out with that & it only cost about $11 more a year. We carry more than that now for about $25 more a year. Our dogs have never ever ever even acted like they may bite someone, but we do have other breeds here & of course they all have teeth so it theoretically can happen. And I can promise that in the even someone is hurt on your property, $100,000 isn't going to cover it.

For military people USAA is a good choice. It is their policy not to descriminate against any breed.

my family + i have used state farm for homeowners, life, auto insurance, etc.. for YEARS + have never had any issues. my dad, being paranoid, called our agent the day i adopted saydee to see if the homeowners insurance would go up, + he said absolutely not. but he did ask for the shelter's info where i got her so he could verify her "history".. which will tell him nothing, since she was a stray. but he said it's just for "going through the procedures", etc. until i got saydee, i wasn't even aware of all these breed specifications.. she's my first "bully breed". but it's good to know that state farm doesn't discriminate. :)

The Hartford and Farmer's Insurance have both supplied me with renter's insurance knowing from the start that I have a pit.

We did look at Liberty Mutual because they had our auto policy for a while, but they required an affidavit to be filled out and a letter from our vet saying Tessa wasn't dangerous. The other two companies didn't. I also learned via the letter that the vet had a prejudice against Pits, so I was actually grateful for the experience so I could find a different vet! I hadn't been wild about how she was with Tessa anyway even though she'd been great with our cat. You'd think vets would know better than to fall for media hype about breeds... *sigh*

So on a slightly different topic, if I ever am looking at going to a different vet or specialist, when I first call I ask how they feel about Pits as a breed.

Do I have to insure my pit? I've never had to insure a dog, so I'm a little confused. Is it "law" or just recommended?

Many homeowners and renters insurance policies include coverage for your dog in the event it bites or injures someone. Many companies have breed restrictions and won't insure your house / apartment if you have a dog on their banned list. Companies like State Farm only want to know if you have a dog and if it has bitten someone. They don't care about the breed.

Lieing about the breed to get insurance is a VERY bad thing. If there ever was an incident and you lied they can deny you coverage and you could literally lose everything.

This is a great point.

What if your dogs breed is indeterminate? At that point can you just indicate that they are mixed?

Depends on your state and what your insurance company requires.

Are you in "Denver"??

As a general rule, whatever your vet has on record as your dog's mix is what that dog is considered to be. However, if the issue is pushed, they may come up with whatever they want.

I'm still betting on DDB mix for Yoda. :D

Yeah, I would probably agree with your guess on his dominant breed. Yoda was labeled as a pit mix originally so that is what the vet has down at this time.

The answer to this question is probably painfully obvious, but my brian is tired today. What's DDB?

I'm not "in" Denver, I'm a few blocks north. I feel like I'm thumbing my nose at them, but I'm in the demilitarized zone so I better be careful :D
