Meet Ulhan (You-lan)

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby pocketpit » February 23rd, 2006, 8:42 pm

Okay, so he's not a Pit Bull but he's a pretty special guy. I now have another foster. Long story short - he belonged to someone I knew who gave him away (sold him is more likely) 3 weeks ago and he was hauled into our clinic by animal control 2 days ago. This former owner wants nothing to do with him since he's "damaged goods" so now he's mine. He'll have his leg amputated and hopefully find a home with someone who wants a super "buddy" and doesn't mind that he'll only have 3 legs.

I can't begin to tell you how much I love this dog! He's a giant, soft hearted mushball who's crate trained, obedience trained, housebroken, gets on fabulous with our girls and is a super babysitter for the two legged variety. I thank God that I was at work the night he was brought in or else he wouldn't be here today.

It looks as though he was hit by a car though the wounds are not fresh. His hock is fractured and the hock area is degloved. If I had to hazzard a guess the injuries are likely over a week old. That and his underweight state make me wonder how long his new owner had him before he got away.

Can't they fix it instead of amputating? I've seen repaired de-gloves.

His hock is fractured pretty good and there has been exposed bone for some time. I'm having a radiograph done tomorrow just to ensure that the fracture is as bad as we fear. The bone being exposed for such an extended period of time also sets up a stong posssibility of infection setting into the actual bone which of course would complicate things tremendously. The flesh itself now that it's been flushed and semi-debrided and is being treated with antibiotics is trying to respond.
If the fracture is a simple one that could be fixed relatively easily then I will try to save the leg. But I'm really afraid that's not going to be an option.

He's taking it like a trooper. I've got him on Tramadol several times a day and Deramaxx as well.
When I changed his wrap last night I got so frustrated because the little turkey kept trying to roll up on his back to get his tummy rubbed! I sort of had to do the beginning stages with one hand since the other was complying with the tummy rub demands just to keep him still. :)

He's beautiful! What a lovely dog. How could anyone let him get into that state? Poor guy.

I agree, I hate to see him lose his leg. If there is any way to save it, please try. It's a bad wound but with antibiotics and care it might be savable. Can you try to save it? He looks like a young dog and what an unnecessary thing to have happen to him.

Thank you for helping him!
