HELP! NY town is considering approving puppy millls

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby mnp13 » February 20th, 2006, 3:34 pm

I'm not 100% up-to-date on existing state regulations, but I've always
been working with the assumption that New York forbids puppy mills (or
dogs bred for wholesale exchange) from operating within the state. Now
the township of Penn Yan (near Seneca Lake) is seeking to approve the
first of it's kind, commercial dog-breeding facility our state. Please
read and urge your representatives to VOTE NO!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NY Puppymill About To Be Approved

Urge Milo Township and Penn Yan, New York, Officials to Deny Approval
of Commercial Dog-Breeding Facility

On February 28, the Zoning Board of Appeals in the township of Milo?
located in Penn Yan, New York?is scheduled to decide whether resident
Lavern Zimmerman will be allowed to build a pole barn to house 150
"breeding stock" dogs. According to a citizen who attended a previous
hearing regarding the proposed facility: "They will be breeding small
dogs (Yorkshire terriers, shih tzus, etc.) in order to sell the puppies
to pet stores. The females will be bred at about 1 year old, 1 to 2
times a year, sometimes without a heat between breeding, until they are
too old for that purpose. USDA regulations state that they only have
to keep the building at 50 degrees in the winter and under 85 degrees
in the summer. All feces, refuse, and carcasses will be put on an
outside compost heap."

Please contact members of the Milo Zoning Board of Appeals. Urge them
not to approve this cruel business, which will only profit off the
suffering of the dogs who are forced to live there, and remind them how
animals suffer for the pet trade.

I've always wondered whether a non-citizen's opinion REALLY matters or not. After all, most politicians are only after votes...what do you think?

It does count because some politicians (clinton) might have aspirations for higher office.

I can't believe it's gotten this far!

I fear that because what they are proposing is legal that it will pass. It's possible that enough pressure could sway their dsecision but it is mostly up to the people of PennYann to put up the majority of the fight.

I would be very happy if wholesaleing was made illegal.

It doesn't hurt! It shows them that this is not just a small town issue but a national one, one that people from all over he US are concerned enough about to get involved.
