Ginger, possible Thyroid Issues or worse

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby bustersmama » February 16th, 2006, 7:49 pm

Well, not to many people know about this yet, but I figure I might need some support in the near future with this.

Ginger is a 6 year old Golden Retriever X. She has been on premium food for almost a year now, after years of crap food. Ginger has had bad allergies in the past when we lived in AL and was also subject to an (almost) monthly ear infection. since we moved out of AL, a lot of her (what used to be common) symptoms faded. Up until recently when I noticed she had some pretty bad "hot spots", these were scabbed (very thick like) over by the time I noticed them. Additionally she has been losing weight , somewhat rapidly in the past month. Her attitude towards her food has changed as well. At one point Ginger would eat whatever I gave her with lots of enthusiasm and finish it off by licking the bowl clean. Nowadays she barely finishes some meals. Lastly her attitude in general is a little off. I find her off by herself more often and maybe a TINY bit lethargic, nothing to weird, since she has always been lazy. I initially tried to attribute this to her getting older, everyone needs a break right?

Well today I took her in to get some blood work done and tomorrow we will follow up and have a physical done as well. I have to tell you that I am a wreck. Ginger was/is my first dog, my first baby and I dont see how I could handle anything happening to her. I am tearing up as I type this - please keep Ginger in your tthoughts and prayers. I will let everyone know what is up when i do.

Awww, I'm sorry to hear she's not been feeling well. I hope the vet finds the problem and that it's not too serious. Good luck and fingers crossed here...

Thanks everyone.

Gingers physical went okay, they took a fecal sample to rule out hook worms (since HG doesnt cover that type of worm), it was negative. I wont have any blood work back till Monday or Tuesday.
