I attended the hearing this evening at the Salem court house where Selectman Tom Fury put forward a proposal to ban pit bulls. And boy was he ever shot down! Every single other member of the board stood up and said that they were opposed to it. Every person who stood up to speak had fantastic things to say about the breed. It was just awesome. There were actually only two people in the room who were supporting the ban: Tom Fury, and the man who had asked him to put forth the proposal.
The man who had asked for the proposal did so because he had been walking his English Bulldog down the street and a pit bull pushed open the door of a store and rushed them. No attack happened, no damages, the dogs never even made contact.
IN A MATTER OF SHEER IRONY:
Not only did the dog officer say that in that situation the man was cited because he didn't have his own dog on a leash, but a pit bull owner stood up to speak and said that his dog, unleashed of course, had gone after her pit bull who was on a leash!! The proposal held no water, had no supporters, and was easily thrown out.
