Heat Intolerance

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby Malli » April 21st, 2012, 1:42 pm

It appears my little import dog is pretty heat intolerant, at 16 degrees celcius(61 farenheit) after about 20 minutes of light running(in a large field/yard playing with some friends) and some heavy wrestling he was panting quite a bit-enough I wanted to keep a bit of an eye on him.
It regularly hits 25 (77 F) here in the summer, so he's got a lot more to deal with coming up!

Anyway, I have a cool dog bandana, similar to this :

Was also thinking of getting this :

the concept seems effective... anyone have any experience with it or have other suggestions?

Has he been to the vet? Unless the humidity was super high, that seems a bit cool to be getting that overheated. And I had to laugh when you said it regularly hits 77. lol I WISH that was considered a high temp here!

He was in for a check up a few weeks ago, which I know was a few weeks ago, but.... I can tell you he's fine. He acts like himself except when he exerts himself in the full sun, then in short order he pants and acts like its 77 and its not.
I'm not at all concerned with there being a medical issue :) (remember I used to work at the animal emergency hospital, so I have a fairly good gauge these things)

It appears I just have an early panter!
As our temps have risen to about 75 farenheit (in the shade), he is able to go for long walks in mainly sun, during the hottest part of the day, and handles everything well.
He is currently laying voluntarily in full sun on our second floor deck with no wind and no panting. Wes keeps asking him if he wants to come in :lol3:

just to update, so far Uzi has been healthy as a horse :)

I think his panting is a combination of simply being very sensitive(and he is sensitive to EVERYTHING :rolleyes2: ) to being warm and not being in as good shape as some dogs, because we do not do fetch.
