Proin long-term effects?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby pitbullmamaliz » April 21st, 2011, 8:11 am

Good morning, all! Does anybody here know what, if any, the long-term effects of Proin are? Inara's already been on it for a couple years and the vet said she'll have to stay on it forever. I was googling side effects this morning and I'm reading about all of these people whose dogs died due to Proin. So now I'm paranoid. And I'm really trying to get her transitioned over to all-natural stuff - no more vaccs (except rabies), ACV for fleas and skeeters, etc.

I tried reducing her Proin to every other day about a year ago (with my vet's permission) and she didn't leak but she got a raging UTI. The vet said that the Proin tightens up those muscles, and when it's reduced her bladder or urethra or something relaxes and opens up, allowing bacteria in. Obviously not good.

So anyway, has anybody had any luck with natural remedies? Or does anybody have info about long-term effects of Proin? And yes, I'm going to talk to my vet when I take Inara in her for her heartworm test, but you guys are my go-to for answers!

The vet wanted me to try Simon on Proin, but I read all the things you did, I'm sure, and decided that at his age, I wasn't willing to put him at risk for what was essentially an inconvenience-- belly bands are so easy in male dogs.

But I did a lot of research on herbal and alternative therapies...I'll try to find my notes and bookmarks for all of that and forward them to you if you want. I do remember that soy isoflavones are sometimes useful for female dogs, especially if you're dealing with spay incontinence... Corn silk helps promote fully emptying the bladder so there's less to leak... Saw palmetto was more for male dogs and prostate issues, but I'll see if it had use in females. Some people reported success moving from high to lower protein diets, but remaining grain free-- Natural Balance and Pinnacle (quinoa is the only grain in Pinnacle) were the 2 brands that best fit that criteria. We ordered the Pinnacle through Petco and it ended up being quite affordable. Simon was on the duck and potato, and even though he ate more than River and Robin on Nature's Variety, his poop was way smaller and more compact. Some have reported particular problems with rice and with green beans.

Simon also took a bladder support supplement that included a variety of herbs (from Petco... I think it was maybe NaturVet brand??) that I thought helped a lot early on in his troubles.

I'll see what else I have down...

I weaned Ruby off of it after she had taken it for months, and now we only use it when she has issues. It's been a while (knock on wood.)

I don't like giving anything for long term.

I should say, Pinnacle's protein is still in the mid-20% range (like 24 or 25%), unlike the 18 or 19 of some of the Natural Balance varieties...

I haven't heard of any complications with giving it in my time at the ER vet.

I will say that if you google any medication you'll find side effects listed in studies that are horrible and awful scary! Even something such as antibiotics. The impression I get is that some side effects might not be true side effects and may be just coincidental, much of the time (but not all of the time!)

I sympathize with your worries - Oscar takes a itty bitty dose of Prednisone daily, and there ARE very real issues with that, although none from him this far; my alternatives, however, are to manage flare ups with much higher doses of Prednisone short term(if I could even get him off the dose he was on now - last time we tried he started scratching himself raw) and antibiotics - which seem to make him feel yuck, or Atopica, which could potentially be 1/4 of my monthly income in one medication alone.
So I totally understand.

When you talk to your vet, there may be bloodwork you can run on her every so often to check for any issues that may be starting. At Oscar's wellness checkup in a few weeks I am going to ask my own vet about anything he might suggest for him, test wise.
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

She has a 60-70lb labrador mix and the dog was getting 2 tablets once a day.

I just dropped her a note on facebook asking how she came to the dosage so I'll let you know as soon as I do!
