Operation Pit is the ASPCA’s new canine health program specially designed to help Pits and Pit mixes be all that they can be! Operation Pit offers free spay, neuter, or vasectomy surgeries to Pit Bulls, along with free Distemper/Parvovirus vaccinations and free microchips. Vaccination and microchipping are optional, but dogs must receive spay, neuter or vasectomy services. Anyone may enlist their Pit Bull in Operation Pit—the program is not limited by income or place of residence.

On the morning of your dog’s visit, you will wait while your dog receives a free physical exam. Once he or she has been examined and all paperwork has been completed, you may leave and we’ll tell you when in the afternoon to come back. Your dog is in and out in one day, and goes home with gifts including a camouflage bandana and tank top.

Participation in Operation Pit is by appointment only—sorry, no walk-ins. Call (877) 900-PITS to find out more or schedule your dog’s visit.

I LOVE that they are offering vastectomies as an option! I think it's a silly surgery myself, since then you still have to worry about prostate issues and all that, but given the locale that may entice some people who want their dog to not be able to reproduce but worry about others commenting or making fun, or just still want the dangly bits. I'd bet they do TONS of vasectomies! What a GREAT program!

I drove up to New York City (from Philly) right before Thanksgiving for Operation Pitt. They took good care of Baku.

He was Neutered, Micro-chipped, given updated vaccinations (even though he was up to date already), and given this "water camouflage" bandanna thing. They gave him a week's worth of anti-biotics as well as 3 days of pain medication.

Outside of *REALLY* having to pee when all was said and done, Baku did well. He didn't like the evil neck cone that they put on him (it easily had a 24" opening at the widest point) and as he walked around, it would scrape on the ground and drive his head down.

I cut the cone a bit and significantly reduced the opening size and such. It was still functional, as far as preventing him from licking himself, but it stopped getting hung up on EVERYTHING like the ground. Forget trying to climb steps with it on.

Anyway, I saw that they did something else to him as well, as kind of their calling card.
They tattooed a Green line on the side of his penis.

Here's a picture:

I made this picture as un-pornographic as possible. You simply see skin, hair and the green tattoo.
My name is Jon and my wife is Manami.
Together we have Baku, our gorgeous Pit. He was born 7/20/09.

My dog has a green tattoo on her belly as well, I find it adorable! Whenever she flips over so someone will give her belly rubs I say she's showing off her ink.

I got my 6 mth old pit Bella spayed last Sun. They did everything at no cost. I only had to get her heartworm test done elsewhere. They altered 28 pits that day. Thumbs up to Operation Pit.

I think this is fantastic and only wish more areas would get a program like this implemented PRONTO.
