Sudden onset lameness

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby ParisStreetPitCrew » May 24th, 2010, 7:18 pm

Jasmine is our old lady lab mix. She's about 13 years old now and has always been a very happy, active girl.

Yesterday morning she didn't come down the stairs for her breakfast at first, and when she did she was limping pretty badly. It's her front leg. She acts ALMOST as if she's dragging the leg because it isn't working right. However, she does right her paw occasionally while hobbling, so I know she can still move it. The pain has been hard to pinpoint, but we think it is coming from her shoulder area.

Today is not better at all. She didn't have an appetite all day until now when she did eat a meal and a half.
I brought her to work today and did some blood work. All looked normal-- which is good, but at the same time it doesn't help us pinpoint any problem.

She will see her vet tomorrow for an examination and possibly xrays.
Please send happy thoughts.

Good thoughts to Jasmine. I have a 13 year old also. Hopefully, it's just arthritis setting in because there are some great supplements out there to help with that.

Lots and lots of good thoughts for Miss Jasmine.

And just as an aside, it's a proven fact that if you post pictures of the patient they heal faster. I wouldn't make that up. :|

Jasmine was bad this morning but has seemed to improve a bit through the day. At the vet she was putting weight on it and using it a bit-- some adrenaline I'm sure, but it's still a good sign.
Xrays looked very nice and clean. No osteosarcoma, no arthritis, no chips or apparent masses. Both vets who saw her were guessing something with her nerves. Possible strain/inflammation causing pressure on her nerves?
She's on some anti-inflammatories and "wait and see". The next step if we needed to diagnose would be actual nerve testing/ekg, etc. Hopefully we'll see improvement soon.

Thanks for the good thoughts. I'll keep you updated on her recovery.

Well, it's been a couple weeks and Jasmine was doing much better until today. When I got home from work, she was holding her leg up again. She's putting more weight on it than the first time, but is still awfully lame.

Phil's taking Sid to the vet tomorrow, so I asked him to talk with Dr. Mike about Jasmine. We'll see if he wants to put her back on the anti-inflammatories again or if he wants to see her. :? :(

Send good thoughts, please.

Jazzy is feeling a bit better today. The vet gave her more deramaxx for when she has issues. They think it is nerve damage from when she and Piper got into a fight a while back and it is taking a long time to heal due to her age.
