I read that as "were you wrapping the bag of peas with a towel" Maybe I am wrong but maybe the coldness is making him jump.

Still sending good, healing thoughts for him. I know he is probably sore as can be. Give him gentle kisses from me.

I'd try for a gel pack and wrap it and see if that makes a difference - we always wrapped the packs at the hospital, just too cold without the wrap.
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

what about just encouraging him to stay still and simply resting the pack on him without holding it?
