yeah, torb is not the best pain control but I think its pretty well her only option
Call2arms - Isa, is it?- do you think she'd get any better pain control if Katrina was able to do subcutaneous injections, if the vet would let her?

Can you get her a comforter? I just saw twin size ones at Walmart the other day for $30 cdn (I'm looking for my own use) You can fold it twice on itself and it makes for a nice padded bed - we use them all the time for dogs at work and they work quite well, and you should be able to chuck the whole thing in the wash.

I did a quick internet search and so far haven't found much info on pain meds in dogs
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

How deep was the cut? I'm sorry to ask so many questions!! If you're fed up don't answer, I understand that you might not want to think about it constantly... :)

No, it's fine, really...I don't mind at all...

It was almost like she was de-scalped...if that makes sense...It was her fur, all the fatty layers...all the way to the abdominal wall (I'm not sure if that's the correct term...it was the muscle that holds all her insides actually inside)...

From what I saw, I thought it was only a 4-5 inch gash that went around her boob...the vet said it went across her entire belly...

Do you think she'd like a heating pad?
They get so huge when they're due to whelp, there must be a ton of pressure and tension on those stitches. Poor Dru. I think she should be an honorary pit bull now, with that kind of injury.

I don't know...I could try...I'm supposed to put a warm compress on her (where the drains are) several times a day...she's draining what looks like blood...

I think it makes it worse that the vet had to stretch her skin to sew her up...he actually didn't think he was going to be able to close it...

I know that Chuck or Adam would 100% let me give pain injections here...but this isn't my normal vet...and he doesn't know me like that, yet.

I'll definitely go to walmart and get her a comforter...that sounds much cheaper than my bed idea...

My friend Christie called a friend of hers who is a vet in Utah (and a repro specialist, to boot)...Ashley (that's her name) said that this far in the game, opioids are safe...I called the emergency vet here, and she told me I could go ahead and give her the torbutol every 6 hours instead of 8...

Heating pad. I got one for Travis at Walmart. It shuts off automatically after a while. It wasn't that much either. They told us warm compresses but the heating pad worked so much better.

give her as much soft padding as you can, and maybe you have a hot water bottle you can wrap in something?

It'll be ok Katrina :hug3: dogs are tough!

Heating pads... Just be careful, sometimes if she's in a crate, she can't move away from it if it gets too hot for her comfort, so make sure to put the comforter on top, or a few layers so that it "insulates"...

Injections of Torbugesic won't do any more effect than the oral version, I think, and I guess it's the only safe opioid that she can have... I'm thinking anything else might be a bad idea for the puppies (such as metacam, tramadol, gabapentin)...

Cold compresses could help for pain, but not so much for drainage, and I think that's more important at this point, that would sounds gruesome. What the hell was she thinking?!?!

She has no sense of self-preservation... :rolleyes2: obviously...

She did sleep through the night...once she laid down, she didn't get up until I went in about an hour ago. She seemed a lot happier this morning...we went out, she used the bathroom...she ate a bit of food (not a whole lot, but a little)...she seemed real thirsty...

She let do a warm compress on her belly...I tried to get a picture, but it was hard to get her to lay down...I think it's more comfortable for her to sit...

She's now back in her crate falling asleep again...

Thank you, everyone...I think she's just happy to be home. When I take her out again (in a few minutes) I'll get some shots of her belly...I got a good look this morning, and it's UGLY!

Is there a lot of black tissue? Do you know if they debrided the laceration ?

It looks really ouchy :( Most likely they used staples because they were fast (and therefore less anesthetic time) but man they must be uncomfortable....

Hang in there, Dru! I think she'll feel SO much better when she has the puppies, so much less tension...

I don't know what that means...

There is a lot of bruising...they told me that yesterday...but I didn't get a good look until today...

I know she has regular sutures inside...well, the kind that disintegrate...

But you're right...once he got looking he realized he'd have to do the inside sutures, then reconstruct some things, and a mastectomy...so they may have done the staples for speed...
