Bacterial Skin Infection, Pics Included

*warning -- gross pics and doggy porn ahead*

Part of the joy of having an allergy dog is the constant possibility of bacterial skin infections. Mac just came down with one last week on his belly and penis and here is what it looks like:

Normally it starts off as small pimply bumps, as seen in the last pic. However, I've been a bit distracted and didn't notice he had another infection until it got a little out-of-control, which is why it is such an angry red colour and has spread. :neutral:

He's been on antibiotics (Cefa) for the past six days and already the infection has faded to a pale pink and he's stopped scratching at them.

*note: this is NOT ringworm, although the pattern of bumps suggests that. If he had ringworm, everyone else in the house would have it as well, because it is HIGHLY contagious.*

I can't believe my mom posted a pic of my weiner on the internet.

I'm just going to roll over and go back to sleep.

Kato's on cephalexin for the same thing. He's also now taking claritin and his scratching stopped virtually overnight.

We use amiltryptiline for Mac's itching and it usually works quite well. Between the dry air, the cold, the woodstove, and his allergies and now the skin infection, he's One Giant Itch.

Is the claritin the same as human or is it for veterinary use only?

It's the same. I just found out you can get it at Walmart on the $4.00 prescription plan. I paid $16.00 for 30 pills and he takes 2 per day, so that's a huge difference. They also have flagyl and cephalexinfor $4.00. I wish I would have known before I got it at the vet. I would check there before buying any meds.

The antidepressant? I didn't know that was used for itching.

Weird, huh? That's how it works in dogs.

It can be used as to modify behaviour as well, but isn't effective in all dogs.

Oh that looks itchy. You should ask your vet to px Panalog cream, it's really handy for that kind of stuff (IF the bacteria involved is affected by it, I think it's pretty broad-spectrum, and anti-fungal as well) and it seriously helped my eczema at it's worst (I used it at work as a last resort a few times before my dermato appt.) so I can vouch for the anti-itch/inflammation AND healing angry skin properties...

I'll have to check that out. He'll end up being a buckethead, too, LOL.

Isn't it, though? I've never seen it pattern out like that on him before. I'm wondering if he picked up something new from the coyote family that has moved into our backyard woods -- they aren't shy around the house and have been "marking" their territory everywhere. :neutral:

King has the same issue. He just started with a break out this week. I missed his allergy shot last week. Cayden was born on Tuesday and that's his shot day (every other week). We got so wrapped up that I forgot to give it to him, and last night I noticed his penis and belly are starting to break out.
