Alternative to cork?

Food, Fitness and how to keep them healthy.

Postby pitbullmamaliz » August 15th, 2010, 9:14 pm

Inara's been on TOTW for about 7 weeks now, and I really am pleased with it. Except for one thing. THE GAS. Dear god my eyes are watering. These are silent but DEADLY.

Instead of shoving a cork up her hiney, what can I give her? Plain yogurt? If so, how much? Probiotics? What are those, where do I find them, and how much do I give her?

Please help! I'm afraid I may not survive this much longer! lol

When I was switching Sid to raw and trying to boost her immune system, we used Garden of Life Primal Defense probiotics. I got them at a local health food store, but you can order online. It came highly recommended by other dog owners.
Kind of expensive, but we were happy with them. We got the powder in a jar and I just mixed with her food. one jar would last us for months.
This is the kind we used:

Forgot to mention, Eagle Pak also makes a probiotic powder we have used during food switches that seemed to help.

I switched Duke to TOTW a couple of weeks ago. I sure am glad we're not having this problem

A mix of Prairie and Fowl.

Foul... there is your answer... :giggle:

Have you tried the Pacific Stream formula yet, or is there a specific reason you're mixing the other two?

I give Kodi plain all natural yogart with active cultures any time he has tummy issues or when I'm switching foods. (or I need to bribe him to eat) I am currently switching him to GO! and I give him enough to coat his food, about a spoonful for his 1/3 cup.

The vet also told me to give him Simethicone(GasX) if the gas is really bad.

When I first switched to TOTW I feed the fowl and oh boy did it give them some gas. We do the prarie stream and it is a lot better. Just a few toots here and there but nothing like before. They have fishy breath after they eat but it goes away.

I was doing the Prairie and FoUl because dogfoodanalysis.com rates them both 6 stars, and Pacific was "only" ( ) 5 stars. Maybe next go round I'll skip the Fowl and get the Pacific.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody!

Toby had pretty horrible gas on TOTW too. Can't remember the formula I was feeding though. He does really well on Blue Buffalo chicken. I once bought and then once acquired a bag of Blue Buffalo Fish and Sweet Potato and when he is on that his breath and gas are horrible. I have said from now on, even if it's free, no more fish and sweet potato!! haha

We are 1/3 through our first bag of TOTW (bison... formula) - and Ruby has VERY offensive and lingering gas. The 2 things I KNOW give her gas are turkey and lamb... Somehow I missed that the 2nd freaking ingredient is LAMB! (why would there be lamb in a beef and bison formula?!?) Ugh - so when this bag is out, I'm just going to switch to a different flavor!! I've thought about giving her Beano but that's for veggie issues mostly, I thing. Gas-X, huh - that sounds hopeful! LOL

I would try some probiotics Liz. If the gas keeps up I'd probably try a different mix as well. Horrible gas like that isn't a great sign

You can get acidipholus tablets too...and just stick 'em in her food. I used them for my old dog who used to get gas occasionally. My guys now don't have too big of a problem...his may have been partly because he gulped his food so quickly.

I agree with Matt...no matter how good the food is, if it's giving her gas, it's not good for her. ;)

Yeah, I'll dump the Fowl and try the Pacific after this runs out. And she has started getting plain yogurt (fat free, so she can watch her girlish figure!) in her food and thinks it's the greatest thing ever. :)

Plain live-culture yogurt is a perfect alternative to buying probiotics. When we were giving it to Harlow her gas was at least 75% better. We would just give her a decent sized spoonful on top of her food. I believe it helped with her yeasty-ness, too.
