Good Books?

This is where to talk about Pit Bulls!

Postby pitbullmamaliz » June 11th, 2006, 9:19 pm

Would you all recommend some good books regarding pit bulls in general, training, etc? I'm just interested in reading more.
Thanks!

You'll need to narrow that down a little...

basic training? OB? tricks? breed in general? breeding? showing?

Breed, in general
OB training in general (or specifically for pit bulls if it exists)
Communication with dogs

Nothing about breeding, showing, or conformation as we won't be doing any of that!

Thanks!

I think she is looking for specific titles that are worth the money. There are plenty of books out there that are complete garbage.

The working Pit Bull by Diane Jessup is good.

I recently purchased a book by Micheal Stratton (in a Belgian used book store of all places) it's good, but has a lot of fighting stories so I have a difficult time stomaching it.

The Idiots Guide to Dog Training has a lot of cool tricks that are taught step by step

I also have "Winning in the show ring" (I think that's the title) which is good but a little hokey

You mean Richard Stratton? Or is there more than one Stratton in the breed?

Honestly, if you can remind yourself to stick to your guns on your position on dog fighting (assuming you are against it) I reccomend any of the Stratton books...I really like the one I have (The World of the APBT, I think...)

There's also a good more sort of coffee table book by "Paul 107" called "Bully: It's the Pits." I liked it a lot...it's more artsy fartsy than informative, but worth it I think...a good one to have our for guests to leaf through and learn a thing or two.

uhhhh... yeah... that's the one. It's out of print and has gone for quite a bit on ebay - I got it for 15 euro. Not bad.

Yes, I'm against fighting, but my dog was basically "tested" so the descriptions turn my stomach because I can imagine Ruby in there...

Just dropped by and thought I'd respond to this thread.

My favorite breed books:

1) the Stratton books (if you can get past the obvious pro-dog fighting stuff, these were the first books I read on the breed and they give you a strong foundation in realpitbull-ology)

2) Working Pit Bull by Jessup to balance out the pro-fighting Stratton stuff.

3) The Jaqueline Fraser-O'Neil books (both the APBT book and the AmStaff book)

4) Colby's Book of the APBT for a nice historical look.

Training Books (these are must-reads!)

1) Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson

2) Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog by Terry Ryan (not a good title--this book is really just about good management and solving basic dog/human conflicts)

3) Clicking With Your Dog by Peggy Tillman

4) Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Training by Pam Denison (I LOVE this book!)

All of these should be available at amazon.com (new or used) or dogwise.com

Dog books of all types have become very very popular in the last 10 years so there are many to chose from. I've been a book collector for almost 40 years so I've seen tons of dog books.

Here are some I've liked and found useful.

------------------------------------

For pit bull breed history and info:

Jessup's "Working Pit Bull" and her "Colby Book of the APBT" are both good.

Richard Stratton wrote about 4 or 5 books, all are worth reading but they do tend to be pro dog fighting

T.L. Williams wrote several books on pit bulls, most are photos and short pedigrees of winning fighting dogs, he also published the magazine "Your Friend and Mine" for a few years. Some of his books are "Braveheart", "American Patriot", "Courage", "Re-Masters of History", "Pit Dogs".

Frank Rocca did 3 or 4 books on game dogs, the newest one "American Bull Terrier Fighting for Life" is the easiest to find. Crenshaw also did a book on his life with the APBT as did Gary Hammonds.

Mike Homan's book "The Complete History of Fighting Dogs" is excellent and full of great photos of old art work showing old time bulldogs. Sadly it is now out of print and selling for $400 (ouch!) on Amazon... I can remember when it was remaindered at $10, too bad I did not buy a stack of them!

There are several old classics that have been reprinted such as Armitage's "Thirty Years with Fighting Dogs", Glass' "The Sporting Bull Terrier", "Memories of the Pit Bull Terrier and His Master", etc.

----------------------------------------------

For dog training and behavior, I found these books useful and well written:

Donaldson's "The Culture Clash" is an interesting book and gives insight into how dogs view things which is not always the same as how humans view them.

Brenda Aloff's books "Aggression in Dogs" and "Canine Body Language" are both excellent.

Bruce Fogle write "Know your Dog", a some what simple book on dog behavior that is almost all photos but it is very useful for spouses and children who do not want to read a lot of text, the book is full of photos telling you how to read your dog's body language. It's not an expensive book either and well worth having.

Jon Katz also wrote some very readable books on dogs based on his own trainings experiences and on studying the roles of dogs in today's society. His earlier books "A Dog Year" and "The Dogs of Bedlam Farm" are about his border collies, his "The New Work of Dogs" is about dogs and how they affect our lives, it has a short sad chapter about a pit bull, still it's an interesting read. His new one "Katz on Dogs" is pretty basic but well written.

Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog" is good, so is "The Dog Whisperer" which is not about the TV trainer Milan but about an English lady and her training of dogs.

-----------------------------------------------

I'll have to check my shelves again and see what I've missed, but this is a start from memory...
