Licking question..

So in the past year, my 11 yr old female has started licking profusely. Where ever she's laying, she will lick a place around her! Pretty icky, but just curious if anyone else has ever had this? Not sure how to break her or be concerned about her?

She's always been a 'kisser', but this is a bit beyond kissing..

We had a Cocker Spaniel that would throw her head back and lick the air CONSTANTLY, it was so annoying. Just lick lick lick lick lick the air... :rolleyes2:

I know that's not helpful at all, but though it might make you feel better if someone else shared.

Does it seem to be calming to her?

I have a shar-pei mix that licks every square inch of the wood floors, If we let her!
It's all wet and disgusting...... :nono:

One of my girlfriends has a pit/rott mix who will pick a spot on the furniture or carpet and just lick, lick, lick, with her eyes closed. Slowly and peacefully like it's calming to her. It's bizarre. And gross if you touch it w/o realizing it. Ick.

My Inara is a licker...it's a soothing thing for her, so for the most part I just let it go. She does it after she's been playing/exercising...so it's like her calm down stage.

She licks the couch, the pillows on the couch...and if she's on the bed, she'll lick pillows. Usually it's John's pillow, so it doesn't bother me so much... :giggle:

. Last night I climbed into bed, and pulled the comforter up...she'd been licking it, and it was all wet. :nono:

Ick!

Unless I can hear it and it's quiet otherwise, I don't bother her...I just let her lick. She eventually falls asleep. And I figure she's not licking herself and causing medical problems...it could be much worse!

Count Sammy in that licker club. He licks the air also like Jen said. Drives me batty but I let him do it for awhile then I tell him to stop and he lays down. But, remember we are talking about Sammy here. He is not the average dog. He is a little on the :crazy2:

A friend of mine had a pug that did that constantly -- if the dog was awake, it was licking. I know they eventually put her on medication to cut back on the behaviour, but I don't remember what it was.

Yea, I think it's a soothing thing for her. She licks where ever she's laying...the couch, the beanbag (her fave), my bed-everywhere. I have special blankets (dog bones and paw prints on it) that cover my couches just for my 'girls'....

My hub gets so angry with her though...I just say 'she can't help it' LOL But he knows I'll protect her every move..she's old and MOMMA'S GIRL :dance:
