The ORIGINAL movie of "The Incredible Journey" is excellent and very true to the book by Sheila Burnford, the dogs and cat do not talk and it's a lovely film, it has a yellow Lab, an English white Bull Terrier (the remake does have an American Bulldog instead), and a Siamese cat.
For other good Bull Terrier movies, try "It's A Dog's Life" based on Richard Harding Davis' book "The Bar Sinister" about a Bull terrier from the fighting rings who makes good and becomes a show dog.
And there is "Baxter", based on the book of the same name, this is an odd one about a rather evil Bull Terrier... Plus the short film by Tim Burton (Nightmare before Christmas) "Frankenwienie" another Bull terrier.
A good old dog film is "Good Bye My Lady" based on the book of the same title by James Street, about a boy living in the southern swamps who finds a Basenji and trains her to hunt and beats the local hunting dogs, but Lady the Basenji is a valuable show dog that was lost, and she is eventually found by her show owners.
Chevy Chase's "Oh Heavenly Dog" is a fun one, Chevy Chase is killed off early in the film and comes back as a dog and has to solve his murder, so he ends up being the dog's voice. It stars "Benji" which is actually the daughter of the original Benji that was on Petticoat Junction TV show.
Of course you have a lot of Disney movies with dogs like "Big Red" about the Irish setter, "Nikki of the North" based on Curwood's book "Nomads of the North" about a husky and a bear; "Savage Sam" which is the sequel to "Old Yeller", and more.
And who can forget "Lassie Come Home" based on Eric Knight's book, the book Lassie was actually based on a border collie.
There was a movie called "Won Ton Ton" about a German Shepherd in Hollywood in the 1920s.
I'm sure I will think of a few more doggy movies!
