Sinonasal Carcinoma

Here is where we can discuss canine cancers and treatment options to create a support system for those dealing with the disease.

Postby plebayo » September 30th, 2009, 10:22 am

So Sofie, my MRSA dog has cancer in her nose. This past friday we went to flush her nose and flushed out a chunk of tissue which we sent in for Biopsy that came back as this nose cancer that I guess is fairly aggressive. Radiation Treatment is the best option but 1.) I don't have $4,000. 2.) I'm not sure I would put a 13 year old dog through the potential trauma of Radiation because it's pretty serious stuff. I was also looking and all radiation can do, like anything else, is buy some time. She could get a year or two out of it, or only a few months.

My boss/veterinarian is going to talk to an oncologist today to see if doing a dose of chemo would buy us some time and hopefully shrink the tumor and make it more comfortable.

My biggest worry is that I won't know when the say it is "time". Like if she isn't showing outward signs of discomfort other than sneezing how do I know she is painful? I just had hoped her legs would fail or she's just get really old and crusty and quit eating, something to make it easier for me. I know she doesn't care that she has this problem, but I care because I want to be able to make the right decisions when the time comes.

Anyway I'm talking to my boss/vet today, we'll see what our options are.

I'm sorry too :(
When she stops doing the things that tell you she's happy (interacting with you, playing, wanting to go for long walks, eating well) then you'll know.

I think everyone worries about it, I think worrying is just one of those things that lets you know you're a good person...

A cancer diagnosis of any kind just really sucks. I know how difficult it is to just get your head straight enough to make a good decision. Make each and every decision based solely on what is best for Sophie. You won't go wrong. Lots of hugs for you and healing thoughts for Sophie.

So here's the plan.

We are going to give Sofie chemo in the form of alternating doses of doxorubicin and carboplatin in conjunction with oral piroxicam.

My boss found this study:
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/jour ... 4/abstract

So we're going to try it and hope it makes her more comfortable and stops the sneezing, bloody noses, and general irritation.

I hope it works out, I'll post general updates here. I hope the chemo isn't too hard on her, she'll be 13 years old on October 31st!

Sorry about the diagnosis...

Piroxicam works magic, a coworker has a dog that has a very aggressive tracheal tumor, and before the piroxicam her dog wasn't eating at all, and right now she's almost "normal"... So at least it should keep any pain under control.
