*Updated 4/27!* Indy's Radiation Therapy

Here is where we can discuss canine cancers and treatment options to create a support system for those dealing with the disease.

Ooooo, yeah! What do they use for normal anesthesia and is propofol used often? What is the time of the actual radiation treatment? What is the time of the whole treatment from knock-out time until they wake up (a guesstimate)?

I just called her and she said they use propofol and the actual radiation treatment is about 1-2 min, although she has seen them last 4min, but that's pretty rare. Her guesstimate for treatment from beginning to end would be 15 - 20 min.

She wishes Indy well!

:woowoo: Thanks, Dee! That's fantastic -- it means I won't have to get a dog-sitter to walk the rest of the mutts while I'm away every day! I can drive down, get the treatment done, and be back for Mr Hampster Bladder (Mac) in time to avoid any accidents!

Malli wrote:wow. I thought the radiation might be pricey. I haven't heard (thats right haven't heard at all) of anywhere around here that can do it, at all. And we have this super fancy facility (fancier then us! ;)) on the mainland that does MRI's and all sorts of things and has about 10 different specialists.

I was really surprised that NO ONE around here does radiation -- our choice was Long Island or Massachusettes. The time for either trip is about the same, but the Norwalk Clinic is not affiliated with the Mass one, so we picked LI.

ouch is right! I'm glad you've chosen to go this route, I'm sure it's a difficult decision. How does he do in boarding situations?

He does okay for a day or two, but he's never been boarded longer than that. I don't know how he'd respond in a strange place. We're probably not going to board him anyway, for purely selfish reasons on my part -- I don't want to be away from him that long. :D

The cost of canine cancer treatment is sobering to say the least. The dogs here are the lucky ones, they have owners dedicated to making decisions based on quality of life for the dog, and following through with whatever sacrifices it takes to make it happen.

Jen, reading this thread brought tears knowing you are facing this with Indy. How lucky he is to have you two willing to make this happen. Now if you could just make the little shyt take his damn pills :bs:

:lol3: Only one more week of meds and he's doing okay with the baby-food-pill-ball getting shoved down his throat!

Thank you. :hug3:

Jen & Steven,

As always, you constantly amaze me with your personal sacrifice for the needs of those that depend on you. :bowWave: Just as many of you have done for your pets, the commitment is lifelong and not without personal sacrifice. :greenRibbon: We all do the best that we can, in our own lives, with our own circumstances. But I am so glad that Indy has you, yet again, to help him. Even with all that we see everyday, my staff and the other doctors have commented on your dedication, and we are all invested in you & Indy having complete success! :hug3:

Wow that really stinks that the closest places for Radiation are so far away from you! I guess we're just spoiled up here in the Boston area having a couple of great hospitals that offer everything.

I'm sure he'll do great with the radiation, even if you do have to slum it on LI ;) *ducks a blow from Joyce*

1) My Vet recommends the Westbury place for cancer treatment. :)

2) When you are here, let me know, as I am 45 minutes away. Anything I can do, you have my number.

3) So, you DON'T want the check I already made out for $10,000.?

Ya know, figuring we live in ultra-modern Fairfield County, there should be something closer! :rolleyes2:

I've already weighed in to you, Jen, but you have my support and all that other foo-foo crap.

Love you. Love the Indy. Things will be good.

Damn it.

And just for good measure, just for you: "epic douchebaggery". ;)

Indy's first oncology appointment is on Tuesday and we will get all the information about his radiation therapy at that visit.

The consultation fee is $150. Any tests the doctor recommends before radiation begins would be extra. Indy's already had his bloodwork done (Superchem/CBC) and he's getting his chest xrays done today (three views). I would recommend getting these tests done at your regular vet's office -- they'll probably be less expensive, but call both offices to make sure.

If anyone has questions about radiation therapy that they would like answered, post them here and I will add them to my list and do my best to get the answers!

In December, shortly after Miss Trouble was diagnosed, we received in the mail several orange bracelets inscribed with the wording "Chase Away K9 Cancer" & "Forever in Our Hearts".

We were so touched by this, Shanna and I put them on and vowed they would remain on our arms until Trouble was ether cancer free or waiting at the bridge.

After receiving Troubles cancer free news yesterday :) we made the joint decision to continue wearing the bracelets until we hear the same news about Indiana Jones.....

Indy, are you listening?
