Christine & Mick

Here is where we can discuss canine cancers and treatment options to create a support system for those dealing with the disease.

Mickey had his treatment.

Dr.Correa is taking him off Vincristine though, because he's not eating and has massive diarrhea.

His white count is very low...

Oh, Christine, I'm sorry...does this mean that you are going to the oral meds now?

No... no oral meds until he comes "out of remission".

It just means that he's not feeling too well, and is much more prone to infections.
He has next week off... and four treatments left after that.
Fingers crossed!

Was the vincristine kind of an antibiotic/anti-nausea type drug?

Glad he got his treatment yesterday, I know both of you will enjoy your week off!

The Vincristine is one of the chemo drugs... she's substituting Vinblastine (?) next time.

We are going for a ride next week anyway, to get his weight and to hang out in the waiting room for a few minutes. Otherwise he'll lose his mind the week after. He is a hound of habit... :rolleyes2:

Is vincristine the one that takes longer to administer etc?

Is there anything you can do, to protect against infection, right now... ie prophalactic antibiotics etc?

No, that's Adriamycine...

We've discussed putting him on "preventative" antibiotics, but I am not crazy about the idea... right now he leads a pretty sheltered life, goes out to pee a LOT (to prevent another kidney or UT infection), and is never unsupervised around the canals.

He DID, however, just develope a garbage bag obsession... w/the bags themselves. He somehow managed to find one, eat it... and then deposited the whole mess neatly in front of my bed, next to three balls and two palm leaves. :mad2: :puke:

Damn dogs. :)

Ok, good..so, he'll still be able to get the chemo, just a different drug. I'm sorry...I just don't know the drugs by name (except the one that starts with A, I can at least recognize that one)...I don't blame you for not wanting to do the antibiotics with him...you don't want him to have a resistance...and if you are able to keep him healthy by keeping him "sheltered" (as you put it), I think you're making the best decision....

I'm sorry to hear this, Christine....but, Kate did really well on the Vinblastine! I was ready to stop chemo because of how sick Kato was from Vincristine and when they switched to Vinblastine it was like a I had new dog! It was very smooth sailing from then on. I just know the same will hold true for Mickey!

Kate & I are sending lots of love & hugs. Hang in there!

I hope the break & the new meds help him feel better.

SO!!! :D  :D

Beast was exceptionally WELL BEHAVED today!!! I let him wear his backpack to the vet, and we only took it off when it was time for the chemo treatment and blood work. He got on the scale without me having to tell him - and then he decided that was a good enough spot for him, and he just sat there. Didn't REALLY want to come into the exam room and looked at all of us like:" HEY... I'm TRYIN' here!" LMAO
I finally coaxed him off the scale and he did not make one peep, just panted and shook like a leaf w/anxiety. No growling, no moaning, no squeaking - nothing! Dr. Correa came in to see if he was even there... lol
He was muzzled, but she examined him and he did not get up until I told him it was okay.
He was in a HUGE hurry to leave and completely ignored every person and dog in the waiting room - they had all been "warned" and were standing in the corners w/their heads turned towards the wall as not to give any eye contact to the man eater. THAT was a little embarrassing, but the new receptionist meant well, I'm sure. :rolleyes2: :giggle:

For the first time since his diagnosis in January his blood work looks "completely normal"!!!
WOOHOOOOOOO!!!

I love that big goof ball to pieces. He tries SO hard. :heartbeat:
